EDIT to ADD:Guys, im still stumped. I need someone to email me so I can send them pics of my bolt. I figured it was Action 3 type so I disassembled my Coharie bolt and removed the wire spring retainer and rollers to install into this HK bolt and the wire spring retainer is too wide to fit the channel of my bolt.  This bolt is clearly dated ID431 on the top, has what appears to be a 6G stamped on the rear locking lug that locks into the carrier to limit forward travel, also has a 0 stamped on the top of the bolt behind the roll pin hole, and is clearly a machined bolt not cast but I do believe this bolt has a F type retainer channel. Im kinda dumbfounded. ID is 1983, and the F type did not take place until 1999 from what I understand.

My bolt has a the face cuts like the second pic belowe, but the roller retainer channel is only 1/8" wide, my Coharie that uses the wire spring is at least 5/16" wide.... Anyone have an F type retainer they can measure the width of ( the narrowest width, not roller to roller )....
Can someone send me an email so I can send you pics....

Just wondering if anyone had or could take pics of the different roller retainer plate channels in the three differrent types of MP5 bolts. Reason i ask, I picked up a ID date coded bolt which if im right is 1983. The channel is only 1/8" wide and i need to buy rollers and a retainer for it. The Cohaie bolt I have is the cast NF461 bolt and Todd claims they are type F, but the channel is wider than the ID coded HK bolt I have. From my reading the type F wasnt done until 1999, so my ID coded bolt cant be type F from what ive read, but from pics on some of the parts house websites, the channel looks like a type F.

Anyone have all three types to compair? Would like pics if anyone has them, or at least measurments for each type.

You can rule out between Gen 1 and Action 3 by looking at the bolt face and seeing the cut. Since you know that your bolt isn't a F type it should be easy to see which one you have. If its a 1st Gen get the Retainer Plate. If its Action 3 get wire version. Check out HKparts.net

Thanks, assuming its an action 3.... Last question, can the F type retainer be used in the Action 3 bolt? Or am I stuck with the wire retainer?

wire retainer. No problems with them, got 4 action 3 bolt headed HKs and they all work just great. ( actually not sure if the 40 is an action 3 or different retainer style cause i havent changed it out)

You can send them to me at

I have a new "F" bolt with the new retainer I will measure for you tomorrow.  I also have a Coharie bolt that used the S-spring to compare if no one can help you before tomorrow.

Many Coharie bolts have the action 3 cuts, but are otherwise old style. Kind of a partial upgrade by Coharie. I ended up saying screw it, and replaced the whole thing with HK. Best reliability upgrade by far.

This picture should clear up things.  Let me know if you need more information.

Bad news is you are stuck with the S-Spring retainer. :(
