I'm thinking about getting this model.  What kind of accuracy can I expect out of the 16inch barrel?  I like the carbine and would love to be able to throw some decent glass on it for some 5-6 hundred yard shooting.  Maybe have the scope on a quick detach setup so I could still use it for up close ad personal encounters if I needed to.

Should I get the 16, or go with the 18?

Accuracy is pretty good.  I saw typical 2" groups with optic.  so you could shoot to 500 with a 10" group.

HOWEVER, you give up even more velocity in dropping to the 16" bbl.

Most factory load figures are arrived at from 22" to 24" bbls, so when you lose all that bbl length, you lose a lot of velocity and velocity is the key to flat shooting for long distances.

Forgot to mention that the 16" uses a special fore end. the 18" is standard HK-19 / G-3 length so a forearm swap is much easier to find the right part to meet you need.

I have both the 15" and 18" PTR's and they both are extremely accurate. The barrels are made by Thompson Center and are Match barrels. I shot my 18" off and sleeping bag yesterday at 130 yards and kept a 1" group. The PTR is IMHO the best deal opn the market and will remain so. With new mags at $3 each and plenty of them it out classes most other 308 weapons out there. I've also found a great source of 7.62x51 brass and bullets which make it even better.

I might just go with the 18 inch barrel then.  The 16 inch felt pretty balanced at the gun shop, I would imagine the 18 handles pretty quick too.
