I believe having a pin there is the illegal part, not the mag release. I'm sure it can be done if you can find a good smith to do it. Not sure what it would cost though.

JLD is retarded and does not know the law. Contact Jayson at Investment Grade Fireams or Ralph at RDTS.  Either one can install one for you.

Yeah, that "illegal" thing doesn't sound right to me either. I think JLD/PTR is smokin crack. Vector Arms puts out HK clones and they come with the mag paddle release. In fact, my V-53 came with one. However, I have no idea if there is something about the .308 models that prevent you from being able to use one. You'll have to check into that.

Keep in mind there is a very fine line between a careful and legal paddle release installation and an illegal machine gun conversion.  Drill the hole all the way through and you'll have legal problems.

That said, there are several well qualified smiths who will do this in a legal way.  It involves not drilling completely through, which is what you would see on a factory gun.

If I remember right, RDTS charged me about $200 to do my PTR about a year and a half ago. You also have to figure in the shipping to them and back.

AZEX charges $160 to do the paddle conversion, not including parts.

(sounds like a bunch of cya to me, nobody ever heard of intent?)

Intent arguments are a little funny with respect to tax laws.

Gee, Mr. IRS agent, I really didn't intend to have a good year and make that extra money.  I guess I don't owe taxes on it...

Intent in these areas has more to do with after the fact hiding and lying about the taxable event rather than the taxable event itself.  But hey, I'm not a lawyer.

I am curious about the BATF ruling.  As technology and techniques improve, the ATF constantly re-rules to keep rifles out of the nebulous "readily convertable" area.  I wonder what they saw about that sheet metal piece?

I have no idea what they saw about (the removal of) that little sheet metal piece.

HK's and some early JLD's don't even have it, and have not (yet) been deemed MG's.

I don't know if the ATF makes more rules or just re-interprets the old ones as they desire.

They could certainly use some oversight/accountability/consistency/less-arbitrariness

JLD might be talking about the legality of filing that little piece of metal on the bottom of the receiver that gets in the way.

Read this disclaimer (near the bottom of the page) and interpret for yourself....   (sounds like a bunch of cya to me, nobody ever heard of intent?)
