| I am new to G3/91's and was wondering what the best clones are since the HK are very hard to come by and really expensive. Any feedback will help. |

Everyone I've talked to has had VERY good results from the JLD PRT-91. You can find them on Atlantic Firearms. They also give an arfcom member discount (cost of shipping). I was about to get one, but I ended up getting an MP5 clone instead. |

My PTR which is the 16" folder is nothing short of amazing. I used to refer to the HK's as german AK's and my gun has run every kind of ammo I have tried with the majority being wolf. At one point it was around 1500 rds with no cleaning whatsoever. I cleaned it eventually by habit not necessity. The only thing I dont like about it is the JLD quad rail is a little loose, and the trigger group/lower has slight front to back movement. On good mags I have never had a jam |
Although, they are not my favorite company right now due to a non-firearm related issue, I must admit that they put out the best "current production" HK-91 clone. They actually bought the HK tooling on the rifle from the Portugal plant when they closed in 2003. There's a link below for more info, though they have the barrel twist wrong. It's actually 1:12 not 1:20 PTR-91KP article I say go for it man, as every guy needs at least one traditional old-school .308 battle rifle in his collection. But just to warn you, after you get HK-91 clone, you'll soon want another foreign .308 battle rifle, which will probably an FAL. Anyway, here's My Precious PTR-91KP. But unless you're dying for a collapsable stock carbine like I was, I say go for the 18" full length version with full stock.

The best clones are built from surplus kits by ARS, IGF and AZEX. They have hammer-forged military spec barrels, use a G3 paddle mag release, will be finished inside and out, and very well put together. The FMPs are very good as well, but are a more "rack grade" G3. The PTR91 is a good clone, but IMO it ain't the BEST. They use a button-rifled target barrel that will not last nearly as long as a milsurp barrel, they do not have a paddle mag release, and QC has been spotty. |

Damit.....JeepDriver Why did you have to go and show me a pic of you OD-Green two-tone JLD. That's look friggin sweet, and now I want one. Plus, back when you bought yours, they actually used the original lowers with the removable grip. After I do an 18" FAL Congo with Tan furniture, I think I may have to looking into getting a set-up like yours, though I'd have to swap the one-piece plastic lower for what you have. |

I currently have a JLD - fit, finish, function are impeccable. JLD uses some HK tooling they bought from somewhere maybe FMP - can't remember for sure thought. Can't go wrong here IMO. If you can find the stamped SAR8 from Springfield (that were actually built in Greece by Hellinic Arms) these are good too but will probably run you a few Ben Franklins more than JLD. I used to have one but had to sell it several years ago (BIG mistake). Stay away from the CETME clones, some are OK alot aren't. CETME was the Spanish predecessor to the G3 (German military version the HK91 is based on). There are a few other clones out there as stated. Investment Grade Firearms gets really high marks from everyone that has one. AZEX and ARS are great too, but these are usually custom builds and may cost more, but you do get what you pay for here. The Special Weapons SW3 are on option too, but I would suggest inspecting and test firing if possible before purchase. The company Special Weapons has put out alot of stuff, some of it good and some of it not quite hitting the target. Don't know if SW is still in business or not. cguns |

I'm not an expert on these guns, but I just bought a PTR91F. I've had it to the range once, and it didn't have any problems cycling. The problem it did have is that I'm out of windage adjustment and still shooting about 3" left at 50 yards. After a lot of digging, it seems that others have had this problem also. So, I'd agree that QC is not the best. I have to call them tomorrow to see what they're going to do about the problem. Its kind of a shame that they're putting rifles out with a problem such as mine...its an otherwise very nice gun. |
I'm thinking you might need the special windage tool they put out. It's red. I think Jensen Arms sells them. |
I believe you're talking about the elevation adjustment tool, which won't help. My PTR got dropped off to be shipped back today. I just hope this is a quick and painless process. |

I have one of the SAR-8's made on a Greek receiver. It is very accurate and has been 100% reliable. The machine work inside is superb. I also saw a few PTR-91's a few weeks ago and the quality looked excellent. The only negative on the models I viewed was the picatinny rail spot welded on the receiver. I prefer the HK system as it is simple and offers very good repeatability. Plus I like the ability to switch from the scope to iron sights without having to remove anything. The rail provides cheaper optics mounting options but, in my opinion, detracts from the rifle. |
| JLD makes a good quality gun, but the only way i have foud to get as close to original is to buy all of the HK parts, USA made required parts and assemble myself. For some of you, you will need to find someone that can machine and weld to disassemble and re assemble parts of it(FIND A GOOD GUNSMITH) I am on my 3rd build right now and it's easy to do. BTW- a friend of mine has a CA89- what a POS it is. they covered it with soo much paint that we had to strip some of it to get it to function right. I tend to like Black Oxide as a finish for all metal parts. if it's good enough for the military!!?? The cost of building one is approx. $450-550(thats the kit+parts) there will be an American made receiver coming on the market soon. i can't say anymore than that right now, but it will be HK quality. they will be made for=MP5, 93/G3, 94, 93, SP89 |
Where can I get an HK kit + US Made parts/receiver for $550? I haven't seen an HK G3 kit in years, and the last available kits were POFs for $400; add a receiver (JLD) and you are well over $600. |

You can buy the real thing for $1500-1700 if you keep your eyes open. There were LOTS of HK91s imported before the ban. They are probably in the top 5 most common pre-ban rifles. If that's too rich for you look for a FMP factory gun, SAR-3/SAR-8 or have a kit built up by a reputable smith. |
| Well, I want to buy another of this type of rifle, but as of now it won't be from JLD. They've had my brand new rifle for three weeks now and its still not fixed. I just don't believe that you should have to deal with this on a $1200 rifle. I don't consider a rifle to be of any quality when it needs a barrel replacement straight out of the box. Next one will either be from someone else or I'll build it. |
