Im working on building a little AR at the moment, but once done Im wanting to build a G36 C...
Where do I find ANY parts for one? Are they available to civilians? Do I have to clone build one?
These may be dump questions, but I know little about HK rifles and there regulations to the public... Figured Id get some info before I get my hopes up at the start of the build.

Thanks

Also are they even worth the trouble of finding and building compared to the good old American M4?

Your best bet will be a parts kit or piecing it together slowly from random spare parts here and there.  In either case you will need a SL8-6 (black SL8-1) to use as a base.

Are they available to civilians?

No.

Do I have to clone build one?

Yes.  See above.

IMO, yes, but to get a true clone you will have to saw off part of the receiver and plastic-weld an aftermarket stock plate to it.  You can make a clone without modifying the receiver but it won't look dimensionally correct.

As far as building a G36C goes, of course you can build one. You'll need an HK SL8 receiver and a G36C parts kit. A parts kit can be purchased from Clyde Armory for about $2400, and the SL8 can be found anywhere.

In order for you to put all of that cool G36C stuff on the SL8 receiver though, you need two things:

1. An SL8 to G36 conversion block
2. Registration of the SL8 receiver as a short barreled rifle

Since there weren't any good solutions for the first item, my brother and I designed and built one. We sold our initial batch of 20 but you might be able to post on HKPro.com and ask if anyone is interested in selling their conversion block. You can see our entire project here:

There is a ton of information on the HKPro website regarding this conversion, and the site is definitely the prime source of information on the net.

Happy converting!

Well... going off what y'all have said and getting a look at price ranges... I guess Ill just stick with ARs and AKs for now. Until the G36 Cs go civilian, when ever that may be!

Thanks y'all

I might as well go ahead and squash this idea now rather than leave you with any lingering hope.

We will NEVER see a civilian G36 unless HK builds a plant in the US or sub-contracts their barrels to a US manufacturer (which they won't do).

In either case, HK is much more interested in military contracts.  Us lowly peons are either the last thing on their list or we aren't even on that list.

The only light at the end of the tunnel so far has been the successful importation of an SL8-4 from Germany to Canada and then to the US.  All completely legal.

The SL8-4 has a G36 bolt head and uses normal, G36 double-stacked magazines unlike the single-stack the SL8-1 and -6 use.  The SL8-4 still needs a slight modification of the receiver but at least it is already a G36 magwell and does not need the major changes the SL8-1 and -6 magwell need. (ETA: The importation was legal because the SL8-4 comes with a 10 round magazine and has little tabs that "prevent" high-capacity G36 magazines from being inserted.)

Sorry, but if you want a G36C anytime soon, a clone is the only way to go.
