I do my best to keep my rifle cleaned and protected aganst rust, but I've found that there are a lot of nooks and crannies that I'm not accustomed to working around in the HK91 design.  So I'm always paranoid that I'm going to miss a spot when wiping it down and inside out with a lube moistened cloth.  So I've thought about picking up some spray, I've seen CLP in a spray bottle at Dick's Sporting Goods but I'm wondering about something a little more penetrating, like an aerosol.  I don't think WD40 is quite what I'm looking for, but I'm wondering if there are any lubricants that are compatable with the typical Hoppe's oil.  I don't know anything about lubricating properties and I wouldn't want to mix anything that's going to interfere with the other doing it's job.  Looking for ideas...

Hmm, maybe I'll go with the spray bottle of CLP.  Millions in R&D can't be (okay, are less likely to be) wrong.

CLP is excellent to use with the PTR91. It's good to wipe down the outside and various parts with for corrosion protection and cleaning and than a good gun grease for lubrication of the bolt and receiver action will give you longer holding lubrication in your higher friction area's.
I use Tetra grease for that. It and the CLP make an excellent combo for maintenance on all my firearms.

then again, they contradict themselves a bit and say that it's acceptable for a number of things, but not especially good at any one thing in particular...

And now I know why I'm not an advanced cleaning and lubing expert!  Recipe for military rifle cleaning: give the troops the simplest procedures possible. hat

So I guess the spray bottle would be good for taking care of business after firing and packing up, but not for detail cleaning later.

cool thanks.  Yeah a heavier grease for the bolt carrier group seems like a good idea.

The HK design has a large amount of gasses and particulates that blow backwards into the action.  Grease plus this makes a big sticky mess.  Once I started using CLP on my HK, I was amazed at how clean it was inside (comparitively...).

That matters on what kind of grease you use. Tetra does an excellent job and does not turn into a sticky mess, but it is a modern fluoropolymer grease and pretty thin compared to other greases. You can use it heavy or a little as a little goes a long ways.

I wouldn't use an older style very heavy grease like the old military greases from WWII, but I wouldn't use them anyways, there way out of date with the times and some things have gotten better.

Tetra's good stuff and cleans up very easily in all my firearms and they get very dirty too. It matches extremely well with CLP and they both have teflon bases and high operating ranges. My PTR loves them both.

If you wanted to thin things out you can easily water it down with some CLP.
All greases are far from equal though and a person need to find which works best for them.

Hmmm...Yes, I was using Lubriplate.    Maybe I should look at Tetra.  Thanks for the tip!

My pleasure.
I don't know if you need anything from Brownell's but I normally get a tube from them also when I get some other things I need. Some local shops have and some don't.
Most do seem to carry it these days.

I use CLP on all my HK firearms, and have good luck with it.
One important key concerning HK family of firearm is they are reliable, even they're dirty...BUT...bone-dry HK firearms WILL make them unreliable.
