I have a chance to pick up a H&K 91 that is NRA 95% with orginal box. He has the orginal stock set and has the retractable H&K stock, five mags and a soft case for $2100. This has been in his hands since around 1984 and has a very low round count. Think I should pick it up for a "safe queen" or pass and keep saving till something else comes down the pipe?

Buy it.

It's an easy $2.5K set up in the original box w/ both the A2 and A3 stocks.

$2100 is a good price for what you're getting, provided the extra stuff is genuine HK.

I had an HK91 back in the pre-ban years.
Nice piece of equipment ,good accuracy for a mass produced military style rifle.
Always was overpriced though.

( I love these "value " questions - because I work in accounting as well as being a
gun nut )

Back around 1984 a NIB HK91 was about $400 - stock $100 - mags $20 each.
That's $600 for your package deal.

Adjusting for inflation - the same stuff should now cost about $1100.

So - you are looking at paying a $1000 premium for a used rifle due to
Import restrictions and "perceived" collector value.

Precisely!

Kinda like buying a milled receiver pre-ban PolyTech AK.

You said the Pre Ban word!!

Seriously - he didn't say exactly why he wanted the HK.
I got nothin against collecting , investing , or Fondling.

But Im a shooter first - want more bang for my bucks

All of these are worthy - and cost less than $2100 NIB.

AKsRule,

The economics don't always work out. For example, if someone were compelled to have, say, 200 magazines for their .308 battle rifle, the HK would be cheaper than the others. For example:

HK package: $2100
200 G3 mags (@$0.75) = $150
Total: $2250

M1A: $1400
200 mags (@$25) = 5000
Total: $6400

AR-10: $1200
200 mags (@$40) = $8000
Total: $9200

StG58: $1300
200 mags (@$4) = $800
Total: $2100

Ok, so the FAL can be slightly cheaper, but the AR10 and M1A owners are being taken to the cleaners.

And in case you would ask "Who has 200 mags for their HK91?", the answer is: me.

Don't forget the $1500or so it will cost you to FILL those Mags.

LOL... Yeah, it's not the original purchase cost that's expensive, it's the consumables. Just like ink jet printers.

I have 130 G3 mags and have two PTR91 rifles.  That's only 65 per rifle.  Woe is me!
