| i decided to put together a ORF mp5/hk94 i was wondering what would need to be done to turn it into an SD, is there anyone who sells the integral supressor or does that have to come from HK, just wondering because if i have to SBR it, I would like to keep the length short opposed to the standard cans that attach to the end of the barrel |

IIRC, and you might want to check on HKPro about this, www.rdts.com/ is the best person for doing a SD conversion. www.rdts.com/HKMP5SD.html If I recall correctly, RDTS is the best place to go, but it will take a very long time. I don't know anybody else that does them either. |

A true SD copy (even in semi) is still going to be about the same length as an MP5 with a detachable can on the end (depending, of course, on the size of the can). True SD's are integral cans with a ported barrel underneath to bleed off gas and drop the velocity of even supersonic 9mm to subsonic levels. The problem is, those ports get dirty and must be kept clean. You also lose the ability to shoot the gun without the can, or to use the can on another 9mm weapon. If you bulge or ring a barrel, it becomes an even more costly and difficult proceedure to get repaired. FWIW, there are really good, small detachable cans that you can use. Check out the Gemtech Raptor, for example. If it were me, I'd only go with a detachable can. |

Jason at Investment Grade Firearms is planning on doing a run of SD guns. He is making the suppressors and doing the work on the HK94 or clones. I was going to get one of my SW5s converted, but the sale of my home and purchase of a new one is going to keep my from getting the work done. I am sure that his conversions are going to be as good as RDTS, but should get done faster (based on what I hear from others). |

A note on MP5SD cans. I have a factory MP5SD. The original can is all aluminum and has a service life around 10,000 rds. This freaked me out so I called HK to see if they could refurb my can when it wore out. They said no but directed me to a company who provides alternate cans. It was KAC. KAC is the can supplier for the military on these (when other than the factory original is wanted). So I got the KAC can. It's stainless steel (finished black), doesn't look as nice (because of the welding construction dimples), but it's a superior can, higher suppression, and is even better when used wet. I also have a barrel extension when I don't want to use a can at all. The HK factory (barrel) port brush is the cat's ass when trying to clean the gas ports on the factory barrel. An odd thing: It seems BATF decided that the ported SD barrel is a suppressor component on the MP5SD, so it's controlled, and I have never seen one for sale. All I see are unported SD barrels for sale if ever. |
