what has become of this weapon? Was it adopted
by SOCOM? All of the images that I have seen from overseas or Homeland Security show our guys with M16's, M4's, or MP5's.

UMP is a law enforcement weapon system, it has been adapted by numerous LE agency, but no military adaption thus far.  Military is getting away from subguns, it is using M4 for all the roles used to be assigned to MP5.
