Hey guys. So I have a Fal that I need to time the barrel on. Other than buying the barrel timing kit, is there anything I can use at home to get it done?

I eyeballed it

Well see how it goes this weekend

You cant be off much as long as the piston doesn't bind in the receiver IMHO

Barrel vise, receiver wrench, timing rods, and a bench vise to put the barrel and receiver together; pin/hole gauge and headspace gauge to install the locking shoulder.

In lieu of the timing rods, you can use a level to assure alignment between the receiver and barrel. IMO, this is not as precise as the timing rods.

mine was off enough to throw off all the shots.

Can you expand on this?

i too use a laser bore site. You can find them relatively cheap. Basically crank the barrel on to where you think it's good, attach lower, throw bore site in and check alignment.

Ok. I will try this. The barrel looks undertimed by a little bit.

A cleaning rod though the hole in the gasblock a cleaning rod across the receiver, line the two rods

(What he said)

I haven't done this myself, but almost the same technique worked on an M1 Garand.

Long flat plate on the receiver flats and a rod through the hole in the gas block for the handguard screw.  Stand back and make a visual check.  When they are parallel, you're timed.

Follow up with the gas piston check.  Insert the gas piston without the spring and upend the barrel, the gas piston should travel freely.

Good luck

I would think a combination for all the above would be a good path to take.
