I want to put a silencer on a 16" sa58. DSA tells me that the muzzle threads are 9/16x24" lh threads. Are the muzzle threads on these rifles good enough to use as-is to mount a muzzle brake/silencer mount, (which I'll need to have custom built) or should I look into having the more standard 5/8x24 threads cut on the muzzle ?
What are you guys doing to quiet down your FAL's? |
| A typical FAL barrel will not be thick enough to suppor 5/8-24 threads, so you would have to get Adco or someone equivalent to add an extension to the barrel for that thread pitch. You can find some QD muzzle devices which are threaded for the 9/16-24LH pitch, though. The main problem is that I hear FALs don't suppress very effectively due to excess gas venting from the gas block, but I'll leave it to those with actual knowledge to confirm or deny. |

griffin armament has adapters for their suppressors.
also have them for the AK and HK's now i need a new 762 can from them... shit. http://www.griffinarmament.com/Taper-Mount-Flash-Suppressor-p/tmfs.htm

On the falfiles, a guy named leah70, was selling thread adapters to switch over to 5/8 threads.
Another member stimpsoncat, is modifying gas plugs to reduce the gas cycling the system. It cannot be used without a suppressor, so you need 2 plugs. I haven't suppressed mine yet, but others that have said the system blow by makes for a not so quiet ride. There's a thread in the class I I I forum over there. |

I guess I got lucky. Bought a DSA 13" barrel assembly from them a couple months ago to SBR my FAL. It had the heavy profile barrel under the handguard and was threaded 5/8x24 at the muzzle, no changes or weird adapters needed. It's at the gunsmith now being installed. Also put on a YHM flash hider mount to use with my Phantom M2 QD. Regardless if the gas block vents a lot it's got to cut down the noise and recoil that the short barrel will cause. Can't wait. |

Flash hider with threads for the barrel and screw on the suppressor on the FH My OSW has 1/28 threads so I just made a 223 FH hole bigger My other FALs I got the FH to fit the threads My OSW has 1/28 also. Just use AR hiders and MB with bigger hole drilled. My Para with 18 inch barrel has standard FAL threads and I use my YHM can threaded to FH on it without any problem |

1. Submit a Form 1
2. Purchase Griffin FAL mount. 3. Purchase Griffin mount adapter for Maglight tube from SD Tactical. 4. Purchase maglight tube, freeze plug, spacer tubing and end cap for maglight from SD Tactical 5. Create Form 1 Silencer for $300-$350 (tax stamp included), and mount it on your $100 Griffin FAL mount. |

I was actually just thinking about doing this yesterday. Do you know if the mount that par0thead151 posted above works with the SDT Griffin mount adapter ? On SDT's page they only mention it being compatible with the flashcomp and muzzlebrake.

| That's pretty much my plan, except, upon further inspection I found that the threads on my rifle are not concentric to the bore. It is noticeable to the naked eye just by looking through the flash hider at the crown. I'd love to have a quieter .308 auto loader, but this may be a bigger project than I want to tackle right now. The form 1 can is still going to happen though. |

How did that happen? Non-concentric threads that is?
I don't have any more of the adapters for 9/16x24LH to 5/8x24RH, might make some more in the future, right now we're too busy doing the ACR stock conversion adapters and about 3 other FAL projects, one of which might make suppressing your FAL a lot easier. More on that in the Fall. Have you considered having your barrel cut and re-threaded and crowned? You could thread it something more popular like 9/16x24 RIGHT hand...? p.s. It's Lear70. Not Leah. Unless you have a heavy Southern drawl. ;) |
