Morning guys. My buddy bought my old rhodie fal and we had it out a few weeks back. It was cycling fine in the morning but towards the end of the day it stopped. We tried different gas system positions but that didn't help. We figured the gas system just needed a good scrubbing as I have never cleaned it. we were shooting suppressed, from time to time.
Anyways, he took the gun apart and said the gas system was pretty gummed up. After cleaning it he took it out to the range. I guess he put the gas at 0 and loaded up some steel cased herters. First shot blew a lot of gas back at him and the bottom mag plate popped off. It scared the scrap out of him. He set the gas at 4, looked the gun over and gave it the all clear. Next rounds cycled fine and he had no issues. Did he experience an overcharge? Or is that a gas system issue? I had the gun for a few years, had it headspaced by an experienced fal guy, and shot a bunch through it with no issues. It's a solid gun. |

Sounds like a typical steel case-head separation and Kaboom. Steel cases are fine in AKs and even ARs, but there have been a large number of similar problems when fired in FALs. Stick with brass and you should be fine, assuming the rifle isn't trashed now.
The cycling problem may be the gas tube pin is missing or too short, allowing the tube to unscrew and gas to leak around the threads. Check there first. |

I had him read this article and then he called me. I guess this is what happened to him to a T.
He said he shot the rest of the herters ammo and then 40 or so of some brass cased stuff. No issues after that first round. Is there anything he should look at during a tear down? Give the bolt face a very close inspection. Make sure that there are no cracks or missing metal. Tell him to clean the bolt thoroughly and use a magnifying glass and take his time. Quoted:
