So, what is your experiences with Coonan and their FAL receivers?
And what do you do with them when ya get them? (Specifically, do you buy the parts and have a roll yer own FAL, pay someone to build it, etc etc) I'm also doing this because the FAL forum has been a bit slow recently. |

If you're even slightly mechanically inclined, you can build it yourself.
It does require some specialized tools ...a receiver wrench for sure and a barrel vise if you can. There are several small hand tools that make the whole job go smoother too. Otherwise, Coonan is as good as it get short of an Imbel receiver. DSA makes fine receiver also. It does take some finesse to get one running good and Arizona Response Systems is the premier builder of FALs in America. ARS is also a nice place to shop for parts, tools and a comprehensive DVD/book on building. Depending on your MO location, there are several extremely competent and knowledgeable FAL shooters in residence. Check out the MO HTF. |

When I spoke to the nice lady at Coonan she said there was at least a 6-8 week wait. |

What do you do when you get them?
Another option for you... If you are of limited specialty tool supply (like calipers that you trust, headspace guages) and unknowing of the proper procedure regarding figuring out locking shoulder dimension requirements, yet have the balls to maybe try re-finnishing it yourself or something like that, do this. Simply send it to a FAL smith (this is a must) to have the barrel timed/installed and locking shoulder properly installed. The latter is not to be screwed with by someone without guages and is trying it for the first time. If you're only going to own one, just have it timed by someone that has done a few hundred. So that your kit will shoot to its best potential. This is much cheaper and smarter to do it this way. Have fun with it and be safe.

I like to DIY, but I know my limitations, and the barrel is something I wouldn't feel comfortable doing, and I'd always feel uncomfortable everytime I'd pull the trigger. |

I have built about a dozen F A Ls. Two on Coonan receivers. The first one was one of the first made by Coonan for Coonan, and it had a minor problem that I addressed successfully and mentioned to a Coonan representative. The problem was corrected by Coonan and my latest build went together beautifully. I can and do recommend them with enthusiasm. |
