Hi guys, I recently got an FAL that I have yet to go shoot. Is this bolt gap normal? Thank you in advance!

No. That looks like an out of battery bolt group.

Well that sucks, its as far forward as it will go and the bolt is seated and locked. What will a smith have to do to it?

new locking shoulder maybe..........maybe more. Get a smith to look at it with the proper headspacing tools.

hopefully not a barrel installation issue...........whats the specs on the rifle

Its a Brazilian kit on a Coonan reciever. I just got back from the smith that built it to tighten up the rear site and to replace the foot. He siad its the way the reciever is made and all is good to go.

This is what my Argy bolt group on my argy FAL looks like when fully into battery.

Hope that helps.

my coonan has a nub on the receiver and creates a gap exactly like that.

Then I stand corrected OP. It may be normal to some FAL rifles.

Hey Devil Dog. It is fine. Coonan receivers do that. Have the head space checked and if it is good, go forth and blast away.

So now I gotta ask...

Why would Coonan do that?  What are the benefits?

They developed a method that avoids the evidently complicated machining of that part of the receiver. I don't know if they designed the casting mold that way or what...

The benefits would be decreased production time and decreased cost to the consumer I suppose.

I have an 18" build on a Coonan receiver. It has that gap also. Like everyone has said previously, if the headspace is good, it shouldn't be a problem. I wondered about the same thing until i searched around and found it was typical for a Coonan to be that way. I have about 400 rounds through mine and not one issue yet.
