| Been looking at FAL's for my next rifle, Don't know to much about them and am looking for a entry level rifle . Can you guys give me some imput on which ones to look at and consider and which ones to stay away from. Also i dont want break the bank either, If I had to spend more than $1000 I would prob just buy a M1A or M-14. Thanks for your imput, this will help me decide. |

I'd recommend doing some research over at the Falfiles in addition to reading all that you can on our subforum here. Given that you are trying to start off without a big investment, I'd check the EE at the FALfiles for a good kit built rifle or shop around for an early Century L1A1 with an IMBEL receiver. These guns usually have a British or Aus parts kit assembled on a mil spec IMBEL upper receiver. They can have a few kinks to work out but, are built with outstanding parts.
As a first rifle, I'd stay away from Entreprise, Century, Hesse, and DPMS receivers. After some research you should be able to spot the details that would point out whether a Century Arms rifle with an unmarked receiver is made on an IMBEL, Argentine (also great), or Century upper. |

I would post a qualifier about Entreprise receivers. Once upon a time they put out a good product, but not recently. Their good receivers were machined by a subcontractor who marked their receivers ABNI on the right side of the receiver, above the mag well. Entreprise's Inch and Israeli pattern receivers were machined by them and are VERY high quality. I don't know which of their standard metrics have the ABNI stamp, and so I would avoid one not marked by them.
Unfortunately DSA's QC has become more than a bit flaky in the last few years. The Fal Files is full of information concerning their receivers/guns, which is a shame. They are currently the only game in town for new FAL stuff, and a lot of their parts are made in-house, and they are the parts that seem to have problems. Their in-house manufactured bolts, for example, have known issues with cracking. With a FAL education is key, and lucky for you there are A LOT of very knowledgeable folks to assist you if you need it. |

If you have access to the tools (or if someone nearby has them and can let you use them) one of the Argentine kits from Sarco with a Coonan receiver is a pretty good deal. Otherwise I'd look for someone selling an Imbel. Under $1000 is reasonable enough, you just might have to do some looking. |
