Please indulge my spate of brainstorming.

I have what I believe is an Austrian STG-58, judging by the original flash hider.

It's just too darn big.

I was looking at DSA's website recently, and came across the SA58 Tactical Carbine, with a 16.25" barrel.  I realize there is some velocity loss incurred with that barrel length, and am willing to live with it.  That rifle would end up costing just shy of, if not a little bit over, $2k.  I know the rifle I own wouldn't sell for half that.

The dissipator style AR's have always been attractive to me, for the sight radius, and long handguards.

Is it feasible to have the 21" full-length barrel cut down, to make, for lack of a better term, a dissipator-style rifle?  I don't know how difficult that would be, due to the FAL's piston system.

I'm not well versed in FAL's, so if this has been done for eons, point me in the right direction.  If it's totally impossible, is there a way to do a mock-dissipator?

I don't know if it would be worth the hassle to get too far off the reservation.  I took mine back to 18" and use a smaller muzzle device, it makes for a much handier rifle without giving too much:

Some FALs are the size of a javelin!

Thanks for the picture.  Here is what I had kind of visualized:

How affected is the FAL gas system, in the way of decreased dwell time?  Is it adjustable enough to handle the shortened barrel?

Can be done, has been done, but you will need to enlarge the gas port considerably.

I found one for sale

If I decide to do it, I think there's a guy that specializes in FAL's about an hour and a half from me.

I'm no FAL gunsmith, but if yours has the adjustable gas system (my DS Arms does, do they all?), can't you just adjust the gas system with a shorter barrel until it works fine?

I think the 18 inch is the way to go for FAL.  You're not going to use it for house clearing work, and with the 308 round, the extra few inches are better to get full use of the amount of powder you're buring.

I have the 16" Tactical Carbine, absolutely love it

I ain't no FAL pro for sure, still building my first.  Will be a PARA gun, for the truck, and I want it to be as compact as possible.

I thought I'd add my two cents because I've been considering a similar idea.

I like 16.25" barrels, short guns, etc, but don't have the ability to go NFA.  I'd like a "permaphantom" type FAL.  Full length gas is too long, and short gas shows too much barrel for my taste.

What you've said and shown is simply a shortened standard barrel on an FAL.  On these the short barrel length in front of the gas hole gives a short dwell, or impulse  time to work the gun.  The hole gets enlarged to compensate, but that only changes the amount of gas, not the length of time.  I've heard good and bad, and seen many that work fine.

A dissipator AR has a low profile gas block in the carbine position under the handguards. Moving the gas block to the rear corrects the impulse time issue, though now the pressure is higher.   I won't say it can't be done on an FAL, just that it doesn't seem worth the trouble......since the gas block would need to protrude somewhat from the hand guard in the short gas position, then you'd have another to hold the full length hand guards in place.

What I've been toying with is the Idea of a "midlength".  The short gas conversion seems to be just cutting the lengths of the parts and relocating the gas block.  Dont see why a midlength would be a problem.  Midlength handguards on the other hand, don't exist, still trying to find out if wood ones could be properly shortened.

You couldn't adjust it out, if the gas hole is too small to start with.  Dwell time is pretty important.  Watched a friend learn that while scratch building a semi-auto 50BMG.  $1200 Lothar Walther, stainless, fluted barrel with the gas hole too close to the muzzle.

OP if you shop around it would be easier to buy one setup the way you want.
I just bought this in the EE
it's set up like you described.

I've got an identical rifle, except I had it switched to para parts.  My understanding is the brake is soldered on or something, and I really want to switch it out for a FH.  Any idea what it takes to get the brake off?

I'm glad you bought it.  I'd been eyeing it pretty hard.  Know why?  Because I have one exactly  like it and I love it!

Glad I was able to get it also. xmass bonus came at right time. It is awsome, I have a M-1A with 22in barrel for long range stuff and now the FAL for close quarters work.
I love the fact it is no longer than a AR carbine.

Elvis121, it looks like my muzzle device is the same as yours ans is also soldered on.  I have no idea what it would take to remove it.  Wait!!!  I've got a Dremel!  That'll do it!

I dug the bitch out of the safe just to post it up in this thread.

I like my ArmaLites, too.
