Getting ready to order a YHM Phantom for my FAL.

What do I need to know?   Are there future gas problems to be aware of?

What's the best thread size to order the QD mount in?

My para tactical was not threaded like a typical Fal - can't remember what it was but after ordering the wrong one I called DSA and got the correct threading.  Didn't open up the gas port all the way the first time and over gassed the hell out it.  much better results the 2nd time out.

My good buddy was experiencing problems with his DSA para when he attached his AAC suppressor on it. It would be all over the target and would never hold a consistent POI. He even experienced a few end cap strikes and had to send it back to aac.

Not sure if it was the rifle or the can but I hope he can figure it out...

From what I've read a wider gas port usually helps the running of a FAL with a suppressor. But by allowing more gas out you are sort of cancelling the effects of the suppressor.

It is the muzzle threading.

Well we will soon find out as he has a new suppressor on the way. He just has to wait for the stamp to come back, thanks .gov.....

Probably not an issue for you but if you have to re-thread your muzzle to take your suppressor mount, make sure the barrel is thick enough.  I have a DSA STG58 and its barrel is too thin to rethread to 5/8x24.  Standard FAL threading is (IIRC) 9/16x24 so if you can find a quick mount in that thread pitch you should be golden.  I have to get a thicker barrel from DSA.

My FAL (finally) will be totally assembled and functioning this week and I am going to also be using a YHM phantom on it. I talked with my gunsmith about the threading options and ended up going with 9/16" 24 RIGHT handed. I chose right handed partly because I guess it is a pain to create left-hand threads (at least on my smith's machine) and more importantly it is a much more common thread pattern here in the States. Also, you can get the original Belgian flash hider to maintain an original look from DSA in a RH thread pattern.

As far as cycling goes, the block is adjustable and you can tailor your gas needs nicely with an FAL. It would be best to spend some time at the range and start with the port open and slowly close it until your rifle has enough gas to cycle every time.

Most folks find there is too much gas with the regulator wide open.

The wide open regulator also vents high-pressure gas straight up, which means noise.

Some custom gear at the front end is the solution I am working on.

Oooooooo, sounds interesting! Working with the gas block?

I can't have cans, but OST for the custom updates.
