I thought these were vaporware...CLICKY
(I tried to post this over on the files but after going through a gauntlet of logging on only to be told I was not logged on I said F-it) |
| I have no interest in monkeying with that receiver. I was just curious because of the stink ORF caused when they "started production" on these. They took pre-payments and no product ever emerged from their building after a few years. The only picture they had on their web site was a partially completed receiver in the white. Just curious as to how many they actually completed. |

There were at least several hundred made.
I was in real early on the pre-buy. About the same time, the ATF announced the barrel and receiver import restriction. I was always looking for a bargin and jumped on the ORF bandwagon. I had had a previous dealing ith ORF a couple of years earlier, they sold off a bunch of Imbel type lll receivers cheap. They had a bunch they were going to convert to type IIs & IIIs. I got a real good price. Others based their opions of ORF on their AK stuff. I really had no experience with their work. I wasn't too concerned about how long it took them to get the receiver out, my credit card was never charged. I was getting a kick out of the fireworks over on the FALfies. Finally got a call from ORF to see if I was still interested. I had ORF install the ejector block so there wouldn't be any warranty issues. The reveiw had already started over on the FAL files before I got my receiver. As soon as it arrived, I started checking it out, I didn't have or preceive the same issues as in the review. As tthe review dragged on and then finally died before any final outome, I held off doing anything with my receiver. I finally got ansy and decided to do a build using mostly old Imbel and SA parts. I didn't even park the receiver, figured I do the build then dissemble and refinish. I also figured I might have to do some WECSOGing before I got done. I don't claim to be a machinist, however I've worked with tools all my life. And I like a challenge. I've probably built around 15 FALs over the years. DSAs, Imbels, a bunch of Centarys and even a Vulcan with no real issues. I'll be honest, the only problem/issue I had was that I needed to run a tap down the receiver threads to get the barrel to seat properly. The build went pretty well overall. I had a minor gas leak when I did the test fire, but a new gas tube and a different gas plug solved the problem. As far as being out of spec and not being properly heat treated, I can't say. The build was easier then some and it works. I don't intend on this being my go to gun or even my 4th or 5th choice. There was a big group buy on these over on 1919a4.com just before Todd died and there seemed to be some interest. No one over on the FALfiles want's to admit to owning one, too much negaive social stigma, but I'd be willing to bet there are a bunch of ORF owners over there. |

Only problem is the rest of the receiver doesn't have the correct profile to look like an original receiver. I've seen a couple of examples now of Type 3s that have been machined after the fact to look like another type and I've heard of others doing it. |

If you look at the receiver from the front the barrel hole looks off centered because they machined the scallop on one side deeper than the other, it would be almost impossible to fix that without welding.
But I could see where you could make it look kinda like a type 1 or 2 receiver but the trained eye could definitely tell the difference and also it is very pricey to convert a type 3 to a 1 or 2, way more than to just buy a DSA type 1 or 2 from the beginning. That is if you can find a smith to even do it. I have converted a few type 3 Imbels into Aussie, Brit and type 2 configuration for myself and friend but it would be at least $275 if I were to price it for the time involved. I do not have a CNC though, I do it on a Bridgeport. |

No one makes them, although Entreprise apparently has considered a run but I doubt anyone will jump on board after their Type 1 group buy fiasco. Coonan does the right markings so the blank ORF receiver would not be needed. I ordered a Coonan with the R1 markings. Eventually I'll have it machined; two of my friends want the same thing done. |
