Howdy everyone,

I am in need of a sling for my Fal and am not really sure which one to go with and how to mount it. There is no sling studs on my rifle so I am guessing my only option is to find one that wraps around the furniture and secures to itself.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

For what kind of activity?

If you want a single point rig, get a 'sling thing', various folks sell them over on falfiles.

Here's a pic of my 3-gun FAL:

they also make sling attachments that use a band  that clamps to the barrel. a simple sling stud in in buttstock will work fine I would imagine too.

Good question. I will use the gun mostly for range days but might take it to front sight for a 4 day rifle course every now and again.

EDT: My AR's have vickers slings and they seem to work well but I did not know if anyone has something better to suggest.

I also have the green DSA X stock, and finding a sling that worked with it was a real pain.

But... I think I've cracked the code on it.

My setup consists of a Spec-Ops patrol sling, using an HK-style hook at the front and an Uncle Mike's swivel at the rear. The HK hook attaches to a Tapco handguard bolt (which has an eyelet attached for this purpose). I removed the barrel band swivel; it wasn't much fun to use, as well as not being quick-detachable.

The rear part of the sling passes through the slot in the buttstock, and attaches via a stud that is screwed into the opposite side of the stock directly aft of the slot. The sling swivel is thus anchored to the stud, but is relieved of stress due to the swivel not being able to pass through the slot.

The latest trend seems to be to mount the forward part of the sling close to the receiver. This makes the sling much less likely to slip off of your shoulder. To give yourself this functionality without having to anchor your sling there, simply use a piece of webbing and cinch-down the sling against the rear of the handguard. Problem solved.

Give me a day or two to get a picture online. My description was probably difficult to visualize.

After suffering through crappy sling installations for the last dozen years, this setup works quite well, and total cost is less than $40.

Okay, once I cracked open the vault I realized that the sling installation described in the previous post was superseded by one that works better.

A video demonstration would be more persuasive, but I don't need the abuse..

Shown without the sling cinched down with a strap or 550 cord to the rear of the handguard, but otherwise recommended to do so..

An HK hook attached to a Tapco handguard screw.  The handguard had to be modified in order for this to work, since DSA puts the threaded handguard on the left.  I drilled through the threaded portion so that the new screw would go in from the left, and use a nut w/nylon washer on the right hand side.

The sling swivel stud is simply screwed into the opposite side of the stock (drill an appropriately sized pilot hole first, of course).  Placing the stud on the opposite side has a couple of benefits––  force on the stud is 90 degrees out, so there is no danger of it pulling out.  Also, the sling will more easily allow you to shoulder the rifle (you would be fighting the tension on the sling otherwise).

Placing the stud on the botton of the stock would make it very unbalanced, and want to twist upside down when slung.  That danger is improved, but not quite eliminated, when placing the stud on the side of the stock.

YMMV
