OK assuming in my hypothetical question
SAY you were replacing a SA M1A Scout with a 18" barrel what FAL would you go with ?
Wanting something similar length a folder would be great . I enjoy the .308 round but hate the M1A now after several major failures

i have a para FAL with a 21" barrel and it handles (length wise) like a full length M14. i would maybe look at the 16.25" or 18" FAL. they'll be more compact.

I carried a 50.61 its a good rifle for a FAL BUT I like the 18" EBR M14 better that said I would never carry any 762 Nato rifle again.

I have a well built M4 also but Im sure you can see my thoughts when a $1600 rifle breaks after 400 rounds .

I'd just get a metric para fal with the ~18" bbl. Its ergonomically quite good, and in terms of reliability the 18" barrels are a bit better than the 16" ones as far as I have heard.

18" DSA Para FAL with railed top cover and either the VLTOR handguard with only the 1 or 2 sections you need for your light/bipod/grip/etc, or plastic handguards with a chunk of rail for a light.  Anything to lighten it up from the quadrail setup.

My 18" has the quadrail, a light, top cover mount, para stock, sling, ML2 in LT mount, and with a loaded magazine it tips the scale 13lbs 4oz.  Now, this is only 1 lb heavier than my SCAR 17 with the same setup (Aimpoint, light, sling) but that 1lb feels incredibly different.

This sounds a lot like this:

Go with the 18" Para, very nice rifle!

OK...I've done exactly that! I traded a beautiful SA Scout Rifle for a DSA STG-58 carbine wit a 16" bbl. To be honest with you, I love the FAL but for my purposes, I wish I had the SA Scout rifle back...accuracy and function is about the same, but the SA has more ergonomic options. Example: I deer hunt with it, and the wood of the SA is much more comfortable to carry and hold in cold weather. But I like the DSA enough to no go out of my way to redo the deal. Keep your scout rifle it is a fine weapon.

So what is stopping you from putting wood on your FAL? Blue Monster over on the FAL Files and Ironwood Designs make very nice wood for FAL's.

This is a Blue Monster stock:

Both sources can provide stocks, pistol grips, and handguards.
