I picked up an FAL parts kit at a local gun auction, and this has apparently been sitting in some farmer's basement for years!

I'm not sure what particular type of FAL kit this is, but it's in very nice condition!

Some of the finish is gone, but I'm not worried about that.  It can be refinished during the build process.

It has a longer 308 barrel with 5-slot LONG birdcage style flash hider & bayonet lug, popsickle stick pistol grip (Inch?), and the lower appears to be marked UB  58  A1  52XX, and on the under side it says 960-00X.

X is where the stampings were light, and in my crummy basement lighting, I couldn't read it too well.

The bag appears to have pretty much 100% of all the parts inside.  Including most pins, springs, etc...  It looks REALLY nice too.

Sorry for the poor cell phone pics!

Anybody know what kind of Kit this is, approximate value, and what number of complaince parts I'll need to turn this into a functional Semi-Auto?
What complaince parts do people typically swap out to meet 922R on these things?

Obviously the trigger group may need to be swapped out, as this one appears to have the full-auto fire control group in it, and I'll likely have to get rid of that, and buy or machine a semi-auto FCG before buying a receiver...

I've never owned an FAL before, know very little about them except for the fact that I've been kicking myself for NOT buying one of these kits 5 to 8 years ago when they were more available.

Thanks for your help ID'ing this, and with any advice for rebuilding it!

PS.  Got this kit for $110.  Good deal?   I kind of figured it was at this auction price...  Most of the local farmers had no idea WTF it was, so I was only bidding against one person to get it.  I knew it was an FAL kit, just not which particular type.

Looks to be a British L1A1 kit. You got a great deal as long as all of the parts are there. You will need 7 US made compliance parts if you use a muzzle device. DSA or possibly Entreprise for a proper receiver. The FCG is fine to use for the build but one of the most commonly replaced with US parts, if you can find them for an Inch rifle. Gunthings.com has inch parts at times.

Best place for FAL/L1A1 info

Awesome!  Thanks for the great advice / info!

I tried registering with their website, but they don't take my Gmail for registration.  I tried Emailing staff about it, but got a message saying the inbox was full.

When building this, I'd LOVE to keep the original muzzle device & bayonet lug setup!  It looks badass, and it's original.  How many would I need to swap if I keep the muzzle device?

I'm thinking, for complaince parts, I'll wind up replacing the following:

Pistol Grip.
Forestock/foregrip panels.
Receiver.
Trigger
Hammer
Disconnect
Gas Piston (if they're not available commercially, I'll probably lathe my own from a high quality steel & mark it U.S....

What other parts would count for US Compliance?  Do they make US Magazine Floorplates or followers for compliance parts?

Edited to add:  My parts kit also came with what appears to be a magazine well block with an ejector?  Will I have to rivet, screw, or pin this into any L1A1 receiver when I get one?  Or does that need to be attached or welded in some other way?

My kit also came with a strange charging handle.  Most of the ones I see are ROUND knobs - but my charging handle is a lever / cocking piece that folds forward up agains what I presume would be the upper receiver area.  Is that odd?  I'll get better photos, and hopefully more info on the markings too.

Thanks for any and all advice!!!  This is great!

i like to keep the outside as original as possible....i am going to use the following on mine:

receiver
hammer
trigger
sear
piston
mag floorplate
charging handle

you could use ironwood usa wood...expensive and may take a while to get....or crappy century plastic....

the fal files is the way to go for info etc....

Inch kits 400-500 plus if the barreli s in good shape.. You may find someone to trade you a nice metric and a little cash for it. Inch charginghandle willnot fit on a metric receiver without machine work. Lower parts donot inchage with metric soyou need inch HTS ifreplacing those for 922. Stockisunige to inch also.

The barrel is in excellent condition.  Great chrome lining, very nice rifling, and the chamber looks nice & shiny too.

I really want to build this as a good inch-kit, but now it appears as though all the INCH receivers & parts are now the rarity, and the METRIC stuff is more common?

Sucky!

I LOVE the look & feel of this lower assembly, and especially the selector lever feels nice & moves much more easily than some of the other FAL's I've tried shooting!

I'd bet this gun will turn out to be moderately accurate, and quite a nice toy - if I can ever get my FALFILES account approved, find a company that makes a GOOD quality Inch Receiver, and learn how to properly headspace the barrel & bolt.

It DID come with the barrel, all the parts, the ejector block, all the fire control parts, the ring piece for around the barrel, the handguards are pretty nice, but worn.  All in all, it looks like a great kit, and appears to have all the parts there!

I hope I can get started on this sometime soon!

The folding charging handle was standard on L1A1s. They were designed to function only in semi-auto, so you shouldn't have to worry about that, but the FCG is three of the easiest compliance parts anyway.

I do not beleive the Brit's ever had chrome lined bore's, just chamber's. The later Aussie's had them though.

You needn't worry about the full auto fire control parts. Even though the INCH pattern rifles were semi only, it doesn't matter. It is the upper receiver on F A Ls/SLRs that determines if the rifle is full auto or not.

Your kit is an SLR kit.

Where are you located (city/state)? Perhaps there is a FALFILES member close by that has the tools and expertise to assemble your kit.

I live in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota.

I tried registering at FALFILES again, but couldn't get any reply from them.  Not even a registration 'confirmation' email - even when using a non-anonymous type Email address.

There MIGHT be a local FALFILES member here - I think there's a MN Hometown Forum guy who has built an FAL as a Short Barreled Rifle.  I'll try to contact him for advice.

Here are a few other photos of the parts kit - hopefully they turned out okay...

I have the black polymer handguards, but they're upstairs in my office.  They have two longer 'slots', and one hole drilled in them for ventilation / cooling, and they do NOT have the bi-pod slots in them.

What's the difference between an SLR, and a L1A1?

SLR or Self Loading Rifle refers to  family of rifles. L1A1 is a member of that family as is a C1A1 and L2A1.

I don't see AU on there...

I see UB 58 A1 5265

Maybe I can get better pics of it this afternoon.

This is what my handguards look like (front), but I don't have photos of them, and the rear sight appears to be British?

I just want to know for sure if it's a British or an Australian kit becauase I want to be sure to order the correct receiver cuts for this type of L1A1.

Edited to add:  What photos should I take of what parts to determine, for sure, what this parts kit is???  Rear Sight?  Handguards?  Barrel Stampings?  Obviously a better one of the lower markings would be good.

ANybody else know or have thoughts?
