Yep, Guilty.

I had only field stripped a FAL, until about a week ago.  Needless to say there was an embarrassing incident when I unscresed the  stock.

Fortunately I had the stock pointed in a safe direction, as I unscrewed it with a normal screwdriver when...............................

ZIINGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!  Out came the buffer/tpye spring at at least 100 mph, maybe that 150 that I was talking about.

No more messing around with that without a dis-assembly tool.  Wow, that was almost

So, remember boys and girls:

1)  Have some idea about what you are doing

2)  For God's sake keep your buttstock pointed in a safe direction!!!

LOL  Done that myself.  I just found the screw last week on one they went haywire on me around Oct.

If your cheap like me and refuse to buy a buttstock tool.  Slide a 22cal cleaning rod into the spring hole.   Keep your hand on the rod handle and the stock spring and screw will stop at the handle.  Also makes it easier to put the spring back in.

It was pretty embarassing.

I made that mistake first time I put the buttstock back on my FAL. I didn't have a tool, so I just carefully stuffed the recoil spring in the tube, with the screw on top of it.

Just as the threads were nearly engaged, meaning the spring was fully compressed, the spring came out of there like one of those novelty "surprise" snakes. The screw hit my forehead leaving a neat little crescent-moon shaped laceration. And launched the screw across the back yard into the grass.

2 inches lower and I'd look like patchy the pirate.

Lessons learned:

1. Beg, borrow or build a spring tool. I used a long screwdriver
2. ALWAYS wear safety glasses when working with springs. They can launch with some force, even the small ones.

The tool is ok for disassembly, but I found it morehelpful for the reassembly.

Even with the tool be careful. Once I wasn't paying close attention and just turning it, when the screw finally came out and shot the tool and the spring out of my hand. When the spring came out,it whipped and threw the plunger across the room!
