So I took my new to me FAL out for our inaugeral range trip. 11th shot and only half the case extracted. The case seperated about the length of a .44mag case from the primer end.
The other half is still in the barrel. The ammo was factory remington 150 grain psp, not reloads. The first 10 rounds all extracted perfectly and was even putting the brass inthe general vicinity of each other. What causes this. Pictures in the near future. |

The cause is most likely a headspace problem. Get a set of go and no-go gauges and check it. It should close with 2 finger pressure on the go and should not close on the no-go gauge. Or it could be a random bad case from the factory. Reloads will usually let go like that from oversizing brass = creating too much headspace.
Check the rest of the fired brass for a possible problem. It may have also been weakened if the headspace is too long. Is the rifle new or used? mfn |

The rifle is used but was built correctly, by a guy that owns more FALs here on the board than most.
A few people seem to think it might have been too high of a gas setting. I didn't adjust t and was told the last setting was for surplus ammo such is generally weaker than factory ammo thus needing a higher gas setting. It is currently on 4. |
| check the head spacing. if its not that then its probably the ammo... i truly hate remington ammo i have had nothing but crap from them recently. 9mm to .223 etc. Also all my reloads for .308 i have done that have had the same thing happen to them have been remington casings. |
| You know now that I think about it I have had a few remington cases do that to me too. I have been getting free brass from a training range and they were all FC and Rem. About half of the Remington cases have been getting a ring around the bottom of the case about an inch up from the bottom. If I load them again they come in two. The rifle only does this with rem brass as I have used other brands without a problem. I think I will save the rem brass for my bolt gun from now on. |
