| Wondering if anyone here might know what is going on, or has any suggestions about what I might be doing wrong. Finally got my STG58 to the range for the first time this year. Starting last summer I was getting a very occasional fail to feed or fail to eject all the way, so I decided I would start over fresh this year by recalibrating the gas setting. I turned the gas setting all the way to 7, and visually confirmed that the vent hole on the top was fully open/exposed. I then proceeded to load a single round in a magazine, and fired the gun - expecting the bolt to not lock back since I had the vent open all the way. (As I recall the procedure is to start like this/repeat and gradually close the vent hole until the bolt locks back) the crazy thing is that even with the gas setting fully open on 7, the bolt reliably locked back. tried it like 5 more times, and the bolt reliably locked back every time. I proceeded to shoot though more than a few magazines, and everything fed properly, but I can't help to think that something is wrong with the gas system, or that I am making a dumb mistake about something. |

The gas system is adjustable to compensate for different powered loads. Let's say you have some hot machine gun ammo. It has a higher gas pressure or different burn rate. You have to vent some off. Then the next shipment is low powered training ammo you need to close the vent so it will operate the gas piston. What ammo are you using? Some hunting ammo is fairly powerful or has a heavier bullet. M1 Garands are made for 30 cal ball ammo and can be damaged by modern hunting ammo. They make an adjustable gas plug to compensate. go here then go to forums. http://falfiles.com direct link http://www.falfiles.com/forums/index.php FIND and READ the FAQs first. |

The ammo I was using was both Yugo (nny) and Portuguese (BF). Both cycled the gun fine with the vent open all the way (setting 7).
Weird thing is that when I first bought the rifle I had to dial the vent all the way down to 5 to get the bolt to lock back with the same ammo. Maybe since the gun is broke in now it cycles easier, and can run with the vent all the way open. Just thought it was weird that it was functioning like it was at 7 now, and wasn't sure if something was wrong. |

I don't understand the problem, the 1st round in the mag loads reliably, it cycles reliably and the bolt locks opwn on the last round.
That's the way it's supposed to work. A dirty gas system will work like closing the vent. I've found that no two rifles are operate the same. This copied from the FALfiles.com: "If it fires reliably between the settings of half-gas and no-gas, I recommend that you set it in the midpoint between those two parameters and forget about it unless you detect function problems. Don't get hung up on the numbers. The numbers mean nothing. Think about your gas in terms of available gas pressure. I like to use a bit more than the minimum pressure necessary for full function. I never look at the numbers on the knob. Some of my FAL's have numbers. Some don't. Numbers mean nothing. Even under the worst circumstances of gas settings, you are not likely to beat a FAL to death unless you use it as a lever for raising a jeep out of the ditch, or you use it as club for knocking down fences." |
