I recently got a used FAL, and took it out to the range today. Fired off 14 rounds without any issues, then had a case failure. Anyway, does this look like an ammo or a headspace problem? The round on the left, was one I shot before the case failure, and the one on the right is the one that failed.

Type of ammo?

Sellier and Bellot .308win 168gr BTHP, about two years old.

I honestly don't know WTF to think about that case.

Any others or is it just that one?

That's the only case that failed.

Looks like the magazine feed lips cut into the brass.

If that is the case, should I try taking an emery cloth, and try smoothing the feed lips?

Weird...maybe a defective thin walled case.

Yeah, I've never seen one fail like that before.  Usually its at the head or near the base.  Looks like a defective case to start with...
I had a couple of failures before, and I posted it here last year.  It was some kind of gas cutting. I sent it back to the MFR so they could have a look.  Luckily, sounds like no damage/injury.  All is good.

By the way, has that case been reloaded??  It almost looks like its been thru a sizing die.  The one on the left really looks that way...

They weren't reloads, that was new factory ammo. I've got a headspace gauge on order, just to be sure that it is in spec.

Just dug through some of my brass and for cases that had been through my AR-10. Found a few S&B with split necks, and others with cracking starting. I'm thinking the brass used is just crap, or way too hard.

Who was the manufacturer of this ammo?

*think I'd want to find out if they knew of any known issues in the batch before I blew up my rifle.

It's Sellier and Bellot 168gr BTHP, it was mentioned a few replies up.

I haven't heard back from Sellier and Bellot on their thoughts. I did get the headspace checked, and it's fine.

Nothing against S&B, big fan of their 45ACP, but they take forever to reply to e-mail. I had an issue with one round and let them know via
e-mail about the problem as an FYI. Got a reply about 8 months later.

Best of luck and hope it was just an odd ball round and not the firearm.

Thankfully, I only have two boxes of the ammo left. So, I'll just leave it in the ammo box in case S&B gets back to me, and wants the ammo. The gun itself is fine, so, I'll just stick to "better" ammo.
