| i have a AR and AK and my STG-58 on a DSArms reciever. i currently have about 2000 rds of mil-surp..argy, port and SA..it sports a aimpoint comp m4s and is VERY accurate..i shoot my AR quite abit as its my go to gun..my AK is like my child..i love her but the fal just doesn't get the attention she needs. i'm thinking of selling her to fund a browning HP and lots of 556..if i thought ammo was always going to be plentiful i'd think twice but i don't see much mil-surp anymore and i kinda doubt we will ever be flooded with it again..Does any country use a 308 as their main battle rifle anymore?.i'm pretty sure the bulk of the ammo made these days are 556 & 7.62x39..i know down the road i'll hate myself for selling it but this way i don't have to worry about finding ammo for it..i guess i'm just thinking out loud..anyone with comments are welcome to chime in |
| Just like what is happening with sidearms (where most operators preferred the 45 over the 9mm, and now we are buying 45 variants to equip our SWAT units and SF people), the 556 round is lighter, you can carry more on your hips, and the recoil is more manageable in full auto BUT it doesn't have penetrating ability against soft armor or urban structure (like cinder blocks). Hence why many operators enjoy the company of Mk43s, Mk48s, Mk14s etc. The 762 round has been on the chopping block by its detractors for 20+ years, but it's still here, in force. |

I think your assessment of surplus ammo is correct. Even though countries are gravitating back to the 308, surplus would be a long ways off if ever. I will keep my fal though. I just love it that much. Even if shooting it is getting to be ridiculously expensive. For economy, i enjoy the Nagants. Very similar ballistics, cheap ammo, cheap rifle just not semi-auto. |

Sell the 5.56 rifles and the AK to fund the Hi Power. After all the HP and FAL go together like peas and carrots. I had an AK and was going to build an AR, but between an M1A I have on layaway and my two FAL's, my bases are covered, so no need for the lesser calibers. I'm not going to be clearing rooms, so .30 cal is all I need. Even if I had to, it would work just fine. .308/7.62 NATO will be around for a long time.
Brazil still uses the 7.62 FAL as their mainline rifle. -Die hard 7.62 NATO fan. |
