I was offered a FAL in trade for an AR I built a while back and didn't like, so I took the guy up on it. I didn't really know much about FALs, but have been reading quite a bit and I'm looking them more and more. Mine is a lowly Century R1A1 Sporter - the previous owner put a humongous Russian Kronos scope on it, which I removed, and I will be replacing the Tapco cover with a standard cover soon. I am hoping to get to shoot it this afternoon. One day I will have the barrel threaded, but for now I think it'll do. Here's a picture of the left and right arms of the free world.

i like how you put it––the left and right arm of the free world.  i have and like them both for different reasons.  you are unlikely to get the tight, little groups you can get with an ar, but they are fun, reliable and easy to clean.  plus i like history.

I was told it was a StG58. It's built on an Imbel receiver. How would I identify the kit? Didn't get to shoot today, either..

Take some detailed pics and post them. Remove the hand guards and take pics of any markings that you find.

+1 to what H_B_R said.

The buttstock is definitely Stg. Do the locking plungers in the bipod have rollers on top?

Not sure what you mean by the plungers or rollers. I removed the handguards and on the left side of the barrel it says 'Kal. 7 62 m/m' followed by two symbols I can't make out, then a 61. On the right side it says '55778.' I will try to get some pictures later if I have the time. Thanks guys.

ETA: Oh yeah, looks like Century marked the barrel 'Centurion 58' in front of the bipod. Also, the selector markings are 'S,' 'E,' and a trapezoidal object.

Inside top of bipod leg, just below where it pivots, there is a plunger that locks the leg in place when folded or deployed. The Stg bipod has a roller on that plunger, the G1 bipod has a solid plunger.

Aha, looks like a roller.

Yes, it was built using an STG kit.

Cool, thanks! Can't wait to shoot this baby! Hopefully this weekend.

Everything that you described indicates it is a Steyr made StG 58 kit built onto an IMBEL receiver. If that barrel was properly recrowned, then it should be an excellent shooter.

BTW, shooting that rifle with the bipod deployed will make your shots group erratically. Either take it off for shooting or keep it folded. You may also find that the group size will get smaller if you have that barrel threaded and put an StG 58 flash suppressor on it.
Those bi pods are cool for display, but suck for anything else. Same for those hand guards. They get too hot to handle very quickly.

Hmm. Can you suggest some replacement handguards? Thanks for the info on the bipod.
