I originally liked the STG58 (read the story of old dirty).  However, once I started comparing it to the SA58 in terms of weight (especially) and also lifetime warranty, I started to get interested in the SA58.

My question is, are there any important differences to be aware of here such as expected reliability, durability, etc. of the SA vs. STG before pulling the trigger on an SA purchase?

Thanks.

The STG is every bit as good as the SA58 in terms of durability, quality, and reliability.

Just depends on your personal preference and budget.

Thanks...actually, I was thinking of it the other way around...is the SA as reliable/durable as the STG (for example, lightweight aluminum lower receiver on the SA vs. steel lower receiver on the STG)...

The aluminum lower will be as good as the steel, albeit lighter. I'd go for the STG simply because of the historical value.

so i guess the STG is a older model?

Personally I think you could wear out the barrel several times before you wore out the aluminum lower, but that is just an unproven hypothesis, not based on any facts.

I have SA-58's but my next FAL will be an 18" DSA built STG. I have an extra aluminum lower from a para conversion on one of my SA58's so that will go on the STG along with a set of plastic hand guards and I won't be able to tell the difference.

You could buy the STG ($1150-$1200 retail) and get an AL lower for $130, plastic hand guards for $50 new or maybe $20 for used Imbels, plus the stock removal tool for $10 and save around $200 - $250.

Or you could buy the STG and a complete DSA complete AL lower  for $343 and still be cheaper than a SA58 plus you would have a hell of a start on a spare parts kit that way.

Buy an STG while you still can and save money too it's a win-win.

For a simple explanation it's pretty much the same except for the steel vs AL lower, flash hider, and metal handguards. Older DSA STG's had imported barrels, but that is no longer legal, so current production is with US made barrels.

The main difference is the STG is assembled from surplus (new and used) military parts with just enough US made parts to be legal.  And the SA58 has more new US made parts. The other difference is the SA has a lifetime warranty and the STG is 1 year.

so you can put the fiberglass handguards on the STG with no trouble?

Yes 100% interchangable. Well exept for the short gas system hand guards such as the tactical model.

When I had my FFL order my DSA Stg58 Carbine, I had him order it with the plastic handguards. It was about $40 extra (at that time) for the handguards. A buddy of mine had the Stg with the aluminum handguards and they heat up FAST!
