First the history, then my FAL dilemma. I have a Century / Imbel receiver L1A1. I have had the rifle for many years and had to send it back to Century for repairs once (the barrel was loose, noticed it after firing a few rounds just after the purchase). Century repaired the rifle and I changed out the stock and added the Tapco (I think or possibly RPB) compliance parts kit. I also acquired a couple of Israeli HB parts kits and one STG kit several years ago as well. I now want a better FAL and would like to make use of some of my parts kits. My question to fellow FAL lovers out there is what should I do. Do I scrap the L1A1 parts and take the Century / Imbel receiver and have someone attach one of my parts kits? If yes, which kits would be the better fit, Israeli HB or STG? Also, who are the best FAL gunsmiths out there? If no, then should I sell the Century / Imbel and buy a new lower? If so, which one would be best for my kits or just keep the kits for spare parts and purchase a new FAL, possibly a DSA? Any advice would greatly be appreciated and before anyone asks, I do not intend to sell any of my parts kits at this time. Thanks in advance for all responses. |

Get on the FALFiles it's FNFAL.com. Buy a complete Imbel or STG kit off of the "Marketplace" page. Or, find a complete kit at a gun show. Then you could have your rifle re-built by one of the popular FAL gunsmiths or even better get the tools and do it yourself. If you have an Imbel receiver you can re-build yours into a very nice FAL much cheaper than buying a DSA. Or, if you have $$, go ahead and buy the DSA. Then you can have two. Cheers, Flyer |
Receiver clamp barrel wrench and a good set of tools, patience and a willingness to make all parts fit together like they were meant for each other. Lapping parts so they go together etc. |

IM sent with contact info if you have any questions on how to assemble, etc. I'd recommend keeping your rifle "as is" since it can be a trick to get a Century rifle to shoot, and if it's shooting then don't fiddle with it. Plus, with FALs If you have a couple of Izzy HB kits, you could sell one off and pay for a new receiver for an Izzy HB build as well as an STG build. If you could, I'd recommend doing both. The HB variant is rare, and the STG is one of the highest quality kits you could find. Best of luck with whatever choice you go with, but it's really within your ability to do them yourself. |
