info on Springfield SAR 48.... > FAL Discussions

What can you tell me about them? Those that own/owned them.....good and bad please. I have a chance to pick one up, but don't know much about them...thanks ahead of time. Pics would be great for comparison also..

Good well made rifle.

It is imported by Springfield. (not sure on manufacturer, maybe IMBEL)

It's as good or slightly better than a real FN mfg FAL, according to American Rifleman magazine back in the day.

I had one and it was great. I only sold it because I thought I had to have an HK91 back
then.

You should buy it if the price is fair.

Which version is it and how much do they want for it?

I'm not sure of which version.....I know it's a preban SAR 48 Heavy Barrel, only fired about 50 rounds, cleaned and stored since, wood furniture, bipod, etc, with a pile of mags. It's not really up for sale - a friend and I at work are talking potential trade, but neither of us really want to get rid of what we'd trade:) I guess we could work in visitation hours?

This is relatively rare version of this gun, the SAR48. There was not many imported before it was banned from import under GWB I. It was based on the Isreali light machine gun

Imbel in Brazil made the receivers, the rest of the parts are Izzy. Assembled in the US by SA before the import ban. (Imbel made the entire SAR-48 light barrel rifles).

I have the SAR-48 Heavy Barrel, I bought a Springfield scope and mounted it on top. It is my favorite gun, most beautiful too.

Edit to add, get it if you can. Whatever you would give up isn't as nice as this FAL.

I have a SAR-4800, it's a post 89' pre 94', so it has a pistol grip & flash supressor.

We agreed on the "trade" tonight at work, so hopefully we'll "git er done"....if so, I'll post pics....of both my loss and my gain. I think I really want this rifle....thanks for all the info and the pics!

charliedontsurf's gun is the standard FAL gun. Wolfpack's gun is the HB version. I believe some of the furniture on the standard and HB are not interchangeable

I don't see why not.
I've seen metric standard barreled receivers with Israeli wood furniture.

I could be wrong about that, but I almost bought such a setup awhile back.

It wasn't a SAR48, but an Imbel receivered standard barrel with Israeli furniture all the way around.

I'm interested to know what the trade was; last I checked these were going for $1400-$1700; I sold mine in 2003 for $1400 and I wish I had it back. It was a pig, but it was fun.

I'm pretty sure all the SAR48s say "match" or something similar. Not sure if there is any difference in the barrels. I have the "bush" (18") model and it has been a great rifle but time to sell it now. Trying to figure out what to sell it for as prices in EE and gunbroker are all over the board. Any suggestions?

I had one of the HB SAR 48s and sold it. I've regretted it ever since.
