Are early import Steyr FALs conspicuously more costly than others, and are they any better?

Better than what?

Better than DSA, or most of the "parts" guns. The early Styer I'm looking at costs about $700 more than the collector DSA's at retail. What did Steyr actualy have do do with these weapons other than import them?

Styers are made in Belgium, well machined, can't say that they are a whole lot better than a current highend model. Some Styers are sear cut, which adds some value to it. There are different batches of these imported over a couple of decades in various configurations. Collecting guns is like collecting cars, would you rather have an original 427 Cobra or a kit car?

The Belgium made Styers are the real deal for collectors, That is why they cost more.  As far as quality they are excellent, But so are DSAs, and with a DSA you can get a sweet looking type 1 or type 2 receiver, Styers were all the slabby looking type 3s.

When I wanted an FAL shooter I went with a DSA STG58 on a type 1 receiver, I had DSA install an Argie chrome lined barrel (No extra cost at the time) & a nice set of their Bipod cut Hand guards;  Priced right (Less than a grand) & the gun shoots great.

So my Styers sit in the safe & gain value while the DSA gets to workout!

Thanks Bill, now I'm getting somewhere. I want an original, and I don't mind paying for it. I do want the benefits associated: speed, or in this case accuracy, reliability, and longevity. This particular weapon has Styer on the right side of the receiver, 308 match on the left side, and is a 1980 import. The term FAL is conspicuously absent, which from what I've been able to read, causes me to question the afformentioned attributes. I don't care to pay extra simply for the Styer name.

Does it have "Fabrique Nationale Herstal Belgium" on the right side also? They are the original designers and manufacturer of the FAL.

You should really be doing your research here.

It should have an FN stamp of some sorts on it. .308 Match was stamped on it to "comply" with the goofy ATF import regs of the time. A number of these were sear cut, I had an 18" version back then, exc rifle. I obtained 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yds with mine.

Looking at the pics, I would say this weapon has a type 3 investment cast receiver. Wouldn't this be "inconsistant" with an expensive FAL?

No, that is how most of them came in.

I can't see paying a fortune for the Styer name. I  just bought a G1 on a Coonan Type1 receiver. I only gave 1K for it so maybe I didn't screw up too badly.

You wouldn't be paying the premium for the "Steyr" name.....you'd be paying the premium because it is a real , Belgian made FAL.....everything else is just a copy!

Steyr is an Austrian manufacturer. Not Belgian.

Steyr, of Secaucus N.J., was one of the US importers of Belgian manufactured FN rifles.

All Steyr manufactured FAL rifles in the US are NFA weapons.
