This kit was built on an Imbel receiver with new plastic furniture awhile back. I added the DSA top cover. Originally the grip and buttstock were wood and the handguard was steel.

Recently an FAL gunsmith told me it was German. Anyway to prove or disprove this? What features give an indication of origin?

Thanks!

I'm a greenie to FAL's, but it looks like an STG-58 to me.

Except for the flash hider.

I'm pretty new to FALs myself. Were STG-58s built in various countries?

G1, and that's a DSA type 2 reciever. A very worthy rifle!  Congrats!

The lower with the wood is German G1, the plastic butt stock is from Austrian  STG58...the carry handle is wrong for both G1 and STG.... put on the wood lower and get the correct CH and you have a G1 look-ee-like.
Another key element is the front site and gas adjuster are supposed to be numbered like the one in the picture of a FN FAL 50.00
The wood lower reciever appears to be cut like a Type 1.... how does it line up with the lightening cuts of your Type 2 upper reciever?
The difference in the lower reciever types is minute and the only distinguishable feature between the two that can be indentified is found in the machining done to the bottom edge of the recoil plate. The Type II is more of a radius cut and the Type I is cut at a 90* angle and a Type 3 would have no cut at all.

Who cares if it's a mutt, how does it shoot?

The stock and pg are Turkish replacement wood that can be identified by the looks and geometrical shape.  On the bi-pod, if it has rollers it is G1 and if not it is a STG-58.

A few years ago a lot of the G1 kits came into the US through several dealers, such as DSA, Tapco, and others, from Turkey.

That's an Imbel receiver that's been cut to type II, probably by ORF. Parts are most likely G1.

the wood may not be turk, a straing on angle can make it hard to tell? and a full view would be a help.
