I'm pretty new to the world of FAL's and L1A1's. I picked this up off a guy and wanted to start doing some "work" to it.
The upper is marked L1A1 Sporter cal.308 CAI - St. Alb VT which looks to be in like new condition.

The lower however is more used for lack of a better word. To me it looks like someone put this gun together. I'm trying to find out more about the lower which so far as I can tell doesn't have many markings other than a SN. I'd like to know if I can switch the thumbhole stock to a more traditional FAL stock set up but I'm somewhat confused on the inch vs. metric pattern.

Any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated. Sorry about the crappy and large pictures.
Thanks,

Your lower is INCH pattern. If the ser# starts with AD, you can narrow it down to Aussie easily.
If it has/had a thumbhole on it, the pistol grip stud most likely was removed.
Gunpartsguy sells a L1A1 pistol grip bushing set up to fix this issue.
90% (my estimate) of FAL's in this country are built from parts kits. Unless you're lucky enough to have a early import, like a Poyer  or have a DSA SA series, they're all built from dismantled/used  military rifles.
Study up on the whole US parts issue before switching/replacing a bunch of parts---thats my suggestion.
The receiver IS new, and is Century Arms. Receivers are destroyed on parts kits for importation----that is why you have used parts on a new receiver. I would shoot it first to see how it runs and if there are any functional issues before ANYTHING else---because that can/will play into what you do concerning parts. There is lots of good info. here and especially at FAL FILES on this stuff.

Thanks for the info! I'm browsing FAL Files right now. The SN does start with an AD, is that a good or a bad thing? Thanks again, I'm really new the the FAL thing but what limited knowledge I do have I really like them.
Thanks again,

It's neither a good or bad thing, if it's serviceable---just tells you its origin. My Century on Imbel has an Aussie lower---it is the rifle that started a FAL addiction
