| I have an FAL that i have owned for several years. I have probably not put 100 rounds through it in the last five years, until recently. I have fallen in love with this rifle. I have put 500 rounds through it in the last month without a hiccup. I don't know alot about it really. It is on a CAI receiver, but it has Made in Canada stamped on the receiver. It has an 18in bbl on it. My question is, where should I set the gas adjustment on this thing. It will fire reliably from wide open down to 1. I know not to tighten it down too much so that I don't beat the rifle to death, but should this thing be functioning with the system open all the way? School me on this if you could. Thanks in advance for the help. |

-does your rifle have a functioning bolt hold open installed? -does it engage (consistently) when the mag is empty thru the entire range of regulation? could be someone really hogged out the gas port as part of the chopmod to ensure reliability w/o chancing having to do it twice if a lesser increase wasn't sufficient. the factory opening on a full length barrel is around 0.098" i think. i did a 16.5" carbine which ran perfectly in the middle of the range of regulation, and i only opened the port to 0.109" (a 7/64 bit). everything else gas related was pretty snug. you could feel the port out with drill bits to see where you're at (careful not to nick things up in there). if the port is wide, and you answered 'yes' to both questions above i'd say let out as much gas as you can until / if you ever need more. either way, really. just one possibility. better too much than not enough!! |

The CAI "Made in Canada" FALs have either Imbel (Brazil) or F.M.A.P. (Argentine) receivers, in case you are interested. Check to see if your piston is visible through the gas bleed off port with the adjuster ring opened all of the way. If the pin that holds the gas tube in place is missing the tube can rotate and close the bleed port. Check to see if the tube turns more than a little also, just in case the port is aligned when you look. |
