I got a phone call about a rifle for sale. It is a FN FAL. I have no experience with these rifles. However I do know this one has a thumbhole stock, 9 mags with ammo!. It is a L1A1 sporter. It has a very simple scope that doesnt have cross hairs. It looks like a pencil tip that comes from the top of the scope.Has a longer barrel with flash suppresser. Looks well used. I was told it has the inch receiver.I had to ask that since I found out there are inch and metric. This rifle is under $600. However , how do I know if its pre or post ban. Does that matter? What would make this a illegal rifle to own without a FFL?Sorry so many questions, but I am not familiar with this weapon. I am thinking of it as a possible investment or trading material.

Find out if it is a Century gun. If so run away, that is why they are selling it. I have yet to shoot a Century gun that does not  jam and will run properly. Some Century FAL's will make a good shooter but 99% are junk. Just be careful not to buy someones lemon!

Not sure on the legal stuff but I'm sure one of the other guy will be soo who can tell you.
Good luck!

Typically, Century guns aren't that great. BUT most run ok. If you can get the L1A1 for $500 or under, and it runs ok, go for it, it will be a good starter FAL.

Make sure if you go with a non DSA that it is on an Imbel upper. I was lucky enough to get one and it shoots just a well as a out of the box DSA. I had it cut to 18", threaded, crowned, some new parts, and reparked. Looks brand new and shoots just as well. DSA is still the one to get though.

A few years back, I got an L1A1 Sporter (Century) with the SUIT (Sight Unit Infantry Trilux) for what, $450 or so.  I figured, $450 was worth the parts on it.

It's been a great rifle.  Fit and finish are nicer on the DSA, but it's been just fine.

Other folks have horror stories, though, so it's sort of if you're feeling lucky.

The two questions I would ask the seller:

"What are the 922r compliance parts?"
and
"Does it run?"

You know the answer the seller will give to the second question, but how he answers the first one might give you a hint as to how much to trust him on the second.

If it has a flash hider, not muzzle brake, then there should be 7 specific parts that are US made.  The Century upper receiver counts as one, things like stock, hand guards, pistol grip, hammer, trigger, sear, pistol grip, muzzle device, charge handle and gas piston count as the other 6.

If it's an Enterprise receiver you have a better chance of getting a good running rifle from what I have read.
