I was shooting my Stg today and I was trying to re-set the gas because I had to take it all apart when I Duracoat'ed it with tiger stripe. I was shooting some old Remington HI-SPEED 150 grain and having a hellava time getting the gas set.

In the past I used Federal Gold Medal 168 grain with very few problems.

My question is this:

I know you can regulate the gas for a wide range of rounds and grains but what is the lightest grain weight you have gotten to work in your rifle?

I just think the 150 was too light. I loaded one round in the mag, adjusted the regulator 1 click and fired. I was waiting until I got the desired results but it never came. I will go out again with the 168's but if anyone had some insight on the grain weight I would be interested.

Thanks

150 should be plenty of weight, any factory loaded 150gr ammo should cycle your rifle fine. Most milsurp is lighter than that.

I gather from your post it's not running even with the port completely closed? Not locking back?

My guess is either something is binding from the Duracoat and slowing the bolt down, or much more likely your gas port is plugged, pull the front sight and check. Or something didn't get put back together correctly.

I agree with K2QB3 - bullet weight isn't the problem, and it should be able to run on commercial - although quality surplus(147gr, give or take) is preferred for these rifles....

Thanks guys! Ill check the port. I masked off all the inner parts and the outside important stuff so the Duracoat would stay out but I'll double check and let you know.

And yes I was having a cycling problem as noted.

Thanks again

Well, I went home and cleaned the hell out of the rifle. I also checked the entire gas system and moving parts for Duracoat overspray and it looked fine. But to be safe I used Duracoat Reducer on the parts and all is well.

Then on to the range at the PD:

Same problem with the 150 grain. It would not cycle even on the most restrictive gas setting. So when I switched over to 168 grain and it worked like a charm.  I even dialed it down to my original setting.

O well thanks for the help. I guess it's just picky.
