| Well, I have decided to look for a FAL at the weekend funshow but don't know if I want Metric or Inch pattern. It really is all quite confusing you know. So which is it and don't say DSA because I'm just not spending that much on a toy. This fal stuff is confusing to me. |
I would get a metric mags are all over and the cost is great. As for what type of FAL to get I have 5 of them STG58, G1, PARA, IZZY HB, and SA R-1 I love all of them but my STG 58 and g1 are kick ass I also built all of them my self and saved alot if you are looking to do a home build I have a few south afrika r-1 kits for sale. anyway good luck and have fun |

As a first I would stay with metric, just because of the parts and mag availability. If you really think your only going to get one, check out the FAL Files Marketplace for a nice Imbel or DCI build. DSA's are always nice for the Koolaid drinkers, but not neccessary. If you have the BRD, and know you will want more than one, just get the assembly tools and start picking out kits. Building requires a couple specific tools, and its a little more difficult than building ARs, but alot easier than bending and riveting flats for AK builds. |
| Yes you do need a few tools but the job is very simple to do. I admit that I have a real "FN" problem they a just so sweet to fire and alot of fun. You realy should spend some time over at FAL Files www.falfiles.com |

Metric is the only way to go for a 1st FAL, IMO - MUCH cheaper mags, and overall metric parts are cheaper, and more available... As for the build, it isn't all that difficult - and can be done with a receiver wrench, pin guages, headspace guages, and a large bench mounted vise... A barrel vise is nice, but the job can be done without one... Seeing how you're in Ohio, I'd check out the offerings of Ohio Rapid Fire - they're 1st rate builders, and have a rep for standing behind their guns.... I'd also recommend getting ahold of Military Gun Supply for a great deal on some used factory FAL mags - they can be had for as little as $3 apiece... Get yourself an FAL ASAP - you'll be glad you did!!! - georgestrings |
