heres a pic of my new DSA tactical.  i find it a work in progress, ive wanted one of these for a very long time and have quite a few things i plan on doing to it.

dont know if i should cut it to where the end of a belgian combo device will be legal barrel length or try and SBR it?

Leave the barrel 16 1/4" and you will be fine. and after that enlarge the gas port to .125 to .130 of an inch. ( a 1/8  or a #30 drill bit will work) that will help with functioning of the gas piston.
Nice rifle you have there.

don't want to trample anyone's advice as i'm sure no expert but i'd advise against going straight to .125 on the port of a carbine; progressively opening & function testing would be my suggestion. i cut one to 16.5" and it runs fine at .109 (7/64"). but isn't your barrel already nearly that short? looks like a short gas system to me. i'd think the port would already be adjusted.

if i cut it , there would only be an inch or two difference, i beleive the combo device is maybe an inch longer than the DSA brake on it right now.  dont think there would be much need to open up the port, and it would be very minor if i did.
