I bought the STG58A from DSA.
It needs some accessories.

The kind of scope I'm looking for would be
around $300. I would also like to have hairline retical. And a rubber eye peice.

mojo said he got this one:
Russian VOMZ 8x56, non-illuminated for $90

Thanks in advance.

Here's an idea

www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=6&f=7&t=167407

Get a Leupold Vari x-II 2-7x33 for around $260, Leupold quick detach rings will set you back another $50, (so you're $10 over budget) but have a great scope set up, have the same cheek well as the iron sights, etc....

legs, I have the same rifle and am also looking at optics.  Which mount did you get?  It looks like DSA's is fairly sturdy.

I have the DSA rail system to mount the scope on.

Surprisingly, I'll second mojo opinion. I;ve got both types of VOMZ 8x56 (illuminated and not) and I've been veru happy with them. One spends most of it;s time on my Israeli heavy Barrel FAL.

I bought the non-illuminated from one of the dealers on the FALfiles, but got the illuminated from Kalinka Optics www.kalinkaoptics.com/cgi-local/kowstore.cgi?user_action=link&link=mainpage for $90. Very responsive and the one case of warranty service I've heard about from them went well.

I.O.R. Valdada M2 scope (illiminated, BDC, detachable rubber eyepiece) available from DSA.
4x24.  Don't let the 24 objective fool you, the optics are so good, you'll think the objective is much larger.

Edit Corrected link to show .308 scope instead of originally linked .223 scope.

Hey, raf.  That scope in your link has built in bullet drop compensation for .223, not 7.61 NATO.  Do you have this scope mounted on a FAL?  Also, do you put your eye up flush with the rubber eye piece?  I've never shot a scope like that.  Can you use it with shooting glasses?  Thanks.

I fixed the link, sorry.  It now links a .308 scope.  One can use the scope with eyepiece and shooting glasses, or do as I did, and remove the eyepiece and install a Butler Creek pop-open lens cover.  It really is a good scope, and is available in NATO or Dragunov reticle styles.
And yes, it mounts to the FAL like it was designed for it.

How about the L2A2 Tri Lux from DSA for $200 ($250 with original topcover)?

Not to be a stick in the mud but FALs are notorious for destroying scopes. The trilux scopes hold well though.  Do a search on the files before slapping a high dollar scope on it.   Jerryboy

Set your gas system correctly and you wont be slamming the bolt carrier into the back of the receiver.

Would a bolt buffer help with the scope trashing?

I'm looking to scope my FAL as well...  I had a IOR knock-off of the DSA scope linked here:  www.dsarms.com/item-detail.cfm?ID=VT424M2308&storeid=1&image=dsa4x24m2scope.gif  but the damn battery compartment/illumination knob popped off after the first few mags I put through it.

I was thinking of one of the third generation Springfield scopes to mount with QD rings.

Whats up man!

Where did you get the STG58A?  Is it similar to the STG58?  How much did ya pay?

Things are looking better finacially, and I am really leaning towards the DSA as my next rifle and setting it up just like you are talking about.

Would you buy the DSA or a Varminter type AR?

Hope you all are well.

SUGGESTION,buy yourself a BUFFER,and a A.R.M.S. Scope Mnt.The only way to go.As mentioned, set your Gas setting to throw your brass about 4 to 8 ft away.Buffers are $14ea,and I use them on both of my (STG58) FALs,1-DSA,1-Imbel Gear Logo,w/Steyr Barrel, the DSA has a 18 1/2" Para barrel, chrome lined, not as accurate as the Steyr, but Pretty.I have a S.F.T.A. 30mmx10x42,made and used by the SEAL teams,Rated to 30,oooft,and 20ft Under salt water.Great Scope. Will post picture later. The new ARMS Mnt is cut all the way to the Front, not like the old style, that had about 2" of Flat space, and hard to mount your scope to,Mine fell off the old style,The new style ARMS mnt is Great, and doesn't scrape up your reciever. When you use the type that screws down rails to hold on your scope mount, they do move, and off goes the Bluing,or Parkerizing.Nice Rifle.

I like the ERGO FAL Metric HK G3 Style Tactical Grip.

The rest of the furniture I like as is.

Legs,
I currently have a surplus S.U.I.T on my STG-58.

I have been looking at the IOR Tactical. You can get it with the .308 reticle and the rubber eyepiece. Check around the surplus distributors as well. There are some Zeiss manufactured surplus pieces out there at decent prices.

legs I got a Burris Compact 4-12x32 on this rifle, it has the target reticle and turrets, I think I got it on sale at Natchez for $280, regular price is $300 IIRC.

edited to add:

Legs check your rear sight, if it doesn't fold down or adjust out of the way you may need High rings to clear it.

I bought DSA's Tacticle Billet Machined QR rings, (HIGH) for mine, their beautiful rings.

I have the IOR Tacticle scope and before you buy one look through the 24MM glass,  it's not my favorite scope.

Here's my DSA Tacticle Carbine with A Bushnell 3200 Elite scope and a Armalite scope mount. see how it clears the rear sight, medium rings won't work on my FAL.
