| What can I expect from a service grade Garand from the CMP? From the description, it doesn't sound like a very nice rifle at all. Has anyone ever had a problem with a CMP rifle? Would I be better/worse off getting a Danish one? |

Service Grade M1's are fine. Expect mismatched parts, mismatched stock components and some dings and dents in the stock. CMP observes limits on trhoat & muzzle wear. Most are shooters. Other than that, the M1's I've received and others that I've handled are fine rifles. You will get a bonafide piece of WWII history that has gone through aresenal rebuild. When you get it, don't mess with it by refinishing it, putting it in a tiger-stripe stock etc. Enjoy it for what it is, and shoot it! |
| You can expect a pretty damn nice rifle. If you're not happy with it the CMP will do what it can to satisfy you and if you have the evil urge to have it refinished, there's always good places like Orion 7 and Fulton Armory..but do take it out to the range and enjoy the history! |
| Wave is correct. What you will get is exactly what the title "service grade" implies. The rifle will be in the same condition it was in when it was the standard issue rifle of the U.S. armed forces. The wood may be dinged a bit but that is what happens to a wood stock when it is in military service. There will be no cracks or chips. The type of wood may vary. The metal may have finish wear. There will be no rust or pitting. The rifle will function safely and reliably. If you are not satsfied, the CMP will exchange it (or refund) and you won't have to go on a waiting list either. They will process your exchange post haste. If your stock is unserviceable, they will send you whatever parts you need and won't ask for the old parts. The Danish rifle will be in the same condition but you will have some foreign Mfg. parts and may have a European Mfg. Beech wood stock. If you want a complete U.S.G.I. M-1 then go with the service grade. If the pedegree doesn't matter then get the Danish issue service grade. |
