In the late 1960's I was a member of a Explorer Scout group (senior Boy Scouts). The leaders of the group were all ex-WWII combat vets. These vets would occasionally take us to a shooting range as they all seemed to be hunters, reloaders, and target shooters. Many of them had ordered surplus M1 carbines I think from the government, at a cost of I think $34 or so, and some of those carbines looked totally unused. They let us boys handle the carbines. I decided that some day I would own one, but it was many years before I bought my first carbine.
At one time I owned at least one from each manufacturer of military carbines from WWII, including an Irwin Pederson, and a paratrooper Inland. Over the years I have sold all but two carbines. Here is a photo of the two I still have, a Rock-ola and a Standard Products. I paid $150 for the Standard Products and $160 for the Rock-ola.  |

Recent purchase
 Erma .22 M1 clone. Still working some bugs out, it has feed issues with the 1 mag that came with it.  I'm hoping just a worn mag, have 1 new one on order at $70 bucks for 1 mag

Beauties in here, thanks for sharing.
I've found a good deal on a 44 Inland. $900. The stock has been sanded and stained, but it looks great. Sorry, no pictures. Would the refinish scare anyone away? |

I got it from Numrichs.....lightly sanded it down and put about 6-8 coats of Boiled Linseed Oil on it. It looks a lot better with the naked eye as my camera washed it out some. Never could get it to get really dark. I have the original Fulton stock, which are always pretty nice finishes, in the safe.

They both came with postwar birch M2 stocks so I got unfinished Boyd's stocks from FA last year and finished them out myself, new metal as needed. I actually think I did a better job on them than FA does on theirs but I'm biased Odd's are I'll do one for the NPM after the holidays. I'll keep the stock for it of course but the current one the metal on the hand guard is off center so it sets off to 1 side. That one is more or less the "safe queen" in the family so she might as well wear a nice dress while on display but keep the Bavarian marked stock for the collectors value |

I'd give them a coat, let set overnite, then if needed use a green pad to rub it down then repeat. I would do that 6-7 times. I let them set a couple days after the last coat then add metal and they were done I did have to test fit the recoil plate but took it out when applying the linseed oil to make sure it soaked in right. I also did the stock on the Plainfield, it was a unfinished one I bought off the EE here 2 years ago that started me doing it. |

Added a really nice CMP Winchester I found today. I did some stock swapping with these three. The Winchester is on 2 parts shy of being 100% Winchester and I’ll get on that next week. CMP Winchester is on top, and 2 Fulton Armory rifles on the bottom.

I posted this in a stand alone thread earlier, but I'll put it here as well. US M1A1 paratrooper carbine. It is an Augusta Arsenal rebuild (marked AAM). I bought it from a retired Lexington county, SC revenue agent. He told me they got these carbines from the army, and he carried it on liquor still raids and similar activities back in the late 60's all through the 70's. He said the sheriff allowed him to keep the carbine when he retired in the early 90's. It has been sitting in his closet ever since. He never shot anything with it except liquor stills, he would use the carbine to punch the still full of holes rather than have to tote an axe into the woods.

Here are my two IBM carbines, with a couple of cartridge sharing "Little Buddies" (Automag III, and old school [no transfer bar safety] Ruger SAA). The original GI wood stocks are kept in the safe. The folding stock IBM has an (AO) marked receiver, made by Thompson for IBM.

Just found this gem. A low serial number, lowest I’ve seen or heard about, Springfield Armory M1 Carbine. It has the latest forged steel SA receiver with a really nice Underwood barrel and trigger group. According to M1carbinesinc.com, the lowest serial number they have observed was SC10045.

M1A1's were all built by Inland originally, but any M1 receiver could be used during an arsenal rebuild, they made no attempt to keep the Inland receivers together with the paratrooper stocks. Mine was an Augusta Arsenal rebuild. |
