Had the opportunity to buy a M1 Garand drill rifle for $75.  At that price, I jumped on it.  Bought it with the intention of using it as a wall hanger.  Pictures below:

Unfortunately, it looks like someone took a torch to the barrel and the receiver, and then welded the barrel, receiver, and bolt together.  So this thing will never be more than a cool wall hanger, and I knew that before I bought it.

But for $75, I'm pretty happy with it!

I'd give that for the same.

Nice!
ATF probably still considers it a firearm.

Nice M1! Did you refinish the stock?  Looks like it has a nice shine to it.

Back in the 1990's you could get a CMP service grade "without wood" for $275

I knew a gunshow vendor who said he had a ton of garand stocks.

He said when you get it, spot by and we'll find one that fits tight.

$50 and I had a tight fitting walnut set that didn't look great.

I carefully stripped all the crud off and refinished it in boiled linseed oil.

without a doubt, the best $325 I've ever spent.

s/n photoshopped due to ARFCOM paranoia

Splice a 10/22 into it!

If I ever come across a cheap M1 drill that's my plan.

It's sad to see such historical items functionally destroyed.  I regret to say that I was compelled to do so to a few firearms which were judged by the Mil/Gov't inadequately de-activated.  I hated to do it, but in my position, I had no choice.  I did the minimum that was required.

In my position, had I refused, the firearm would have been confiscated (and totally destroyed), and I, as well as other members of the organization could have been brought up on Fed firearms charges.  Perhaps the longstanding organization itself.

I wish I could have gotten around such de-activation, but BATF/Mil inspection was required.  Again, I regret performing the action, but it was done with the least possible violence to the firearm.

Agreed, I hate to see a piece of history like this destroyed.  I will say I did re-activate a 1903A3 drill rifle.  The receiver was recovered from a drill rifle and I slowly collected the parts until I had the parts to build a complete rifle.

Plenty of usable parts on that rifle to make that $75 a steal. Stock w/metal, rear sight assembly, trigger group, op rod and gas cylinder are all worth that each.

Right!  I know, with a barreled action, bolt, and trigger group (this one is empty, the the trigger was welded in place), I could have a functioning M1.

The good parts, if any, will be worth more than that.

Used one long ago to make a working rifle.  Another time bought one cheap for the wood for a "woodless Dane" from the CMP.
