It was the fourth of July, Independence Day, and I was just a tiny bit worried deep down inside, not a lot but enough. It was driven by the unending news reports to be on alert for terrorist attacks. The news reports were far worse than the reality of the situation. Still, I was feeling unsure and did not want any nasty surprises. So, I went to the safe, opened it and checked all my firearms. I made sure everything was clean and lubed and had fresh batteries for their lights and sights.
We spent a few minutes reviewing the operation of an AR and the red dot sights and the lights. Then, I reached into the back row and pulled out my M1 Garand. No lights, no battery-powered sights. It was bigger and heavier than any of my AR's. My wife asked, "Is that mine"? I said, "This one is mine but yours is just like it". I pulled hers out of the safe - all original, May 1945, unfired except for arsenal testing. We spent a few minutes going over the operation of the M1 rifle and how to avoid M1 thumb. I reminded her to close the trigger guard before loading, as I leave them open for storage. I showed her how to load and unload it. She said it was big and heavy. "Do we have enough ammo?", was her next question. I showed her the ammo cans and the spam cans. Then, she said, "We really need to go to the range". There was a sense of certainty in her voice. The M1 has something the AR does not. I don't know what it is but we like it. We both felt better and put the rifles back in the safe, more secure in the knowledge we had them if we needed them. God and guns,... yes, you got that right. Our thanks go out to Mr. Garand and to the people at the CMP for the guns and ammo. |

*** A lonely tear falls to the keyboard ***
That's poetry... I mean... like, beautiful. Inspirational in its simplicity. When you began explaining the "intimacy" with your wife and a rifle in front of the safe - the 70's porn-music started getting "funky" in my brain. (Just kidding !!!) Glad the 4th was good to you and yours, Trollslayer. May you have many more to enjoy. |
