So, my local dealer ordered this rifle for a customer who decided he didn't want it when it showed up.  When I saw it, I was caught off guard as I thought you could only get the Socom 16 with either the black or green synthetic stock.  The price seemed good compared to other places I went.  I got this at $1588, the other places had it in synthetic for $1800+.

The main role of this rifle for me is a patrol rifle.  I'm tired of being out-gunned on the streets and giving me an M4 seems to almost make me even.  This will be a multi-role rifle for me.  It will fill the role of a hunting rifle.  I have no intentions of shooting past 3-400 yards so I didn't need a 22in barrel.  I wanted a magazine-fed rifle.  I wanted good knockdown power.  I also wanted semi-auto for multiple engagements if necessary.  This rifle just fits all the roles good.  Yes, I know, it doesn't do any one perfectly, but good enough for what I need.

Now, I just need to find a real leather sling so I can get rid of the filler sling on it.  I've been after an M1A for seven years now.  Enjoy, just don't drool too much on it.  I'm planning on popping her cherry this weekend.

I think you made a great choice, post a range report when you're finished this weekend.

My CQB-16 was built in 2011, it's been in several different stocks over the years, but it is now in a GI fiberglass stock.
I have a pristine GI Walnut stock that it would look good in, but I'm not ready to use it yet.

Still working out attaching a sling, and I'm also working on a red dot that will co-witness the irons.

My cousin still uses my old SOCOM as a ranch rifle and it gets beat to shit and the occasional lube when I see it.  Nice Score OP

Could you give two or three instances where you personally were "outgunned on the street"?

Sure. Though I think he's getting at the "tired of" which implies that it happens reasonably frequently or regularly, enough to be a wearying bother.

Besides which, there are precious few instances of a cop with a semi-auto rifle (in a rifle caliber) actually being "outgunned" in recent history. Meaning the suspect possessed more or more effective firepower than the officer(s).

SOCOMs are 3-6 minute guns that don't take to magnified optics well. I can see why a 7.62 could be handy for checkpoints or something but I'd feel underfunded with this vice an M4. It's not longer ranged and it can't equal an M4 up close.

Looks like it would be a fun range gun though.

Yep, things changed after the Miami shoot out in the 80's.

I guess any mass produced M1A could be a 3-6 MOA rifle, but it's been my experience that the rigid 16.25" is much more accurate than that. Scoping the M14 has been an issue since day one, but there are 'new & improved' solutions... the M4 is a nice carbine...

I could understand 3-4 MOA for a SOCOM in a flimsy Springfield synthetic stock using cheap ammo with a shooter that isn't very experienced, but 5-6 MOA is not very realistic at all. It doesn't take much work or money at all to get them to shoot under 2 MOA, and there are several that shoot sub-MOA groups.

Exactly. This is the same way that 12" AKs can shoot much tighter groups that standard 16" ones can.

Just a set of Low Profile 30 mm rings.  You can go with the cheapo Barska rings, or up to Daniel Defense for a sawbuck.

Lots of reports of that kind of accuracy with ball ammunition.

I don't know if it would help much, but I might try a flash hider instead of the muzzle brake if you are going to hunt with it.  I have a Scout Squad (the 18" version) with a brake and it is really loud.  I think they look better with a FH anyways, I just can't have one in the shit hole I live.  Makes the gun too dangerous with a FH.

You might want to replace the ghost ring sights with the standard sight for any distance shooting.

I also replaced my black synthetic stock with a walnut M14 stock from Fred's.
