I have a friend with a very old Springfield M1A.  The serial number is 002xxx which I believe is around 1974/1975.  I've always wanted an early all USGI M1A and I'm thinking about taking the plunge.

What do I need to be looking for, or avoiding on an old M1A like this.  Also is there a good way to check the barrel without disassembling it?

Thanks.

1800+ depending on where it was made and who is in the market for it.

The older the better is most often the case w/ springfield M1As.  Check the markings on the major parts.  A rifle like that w/ USGI parts will go for 1600-2000 today if you watch gunbroker.

Thanks guys.. Looks like it's not really a deal.  Asking price is around $2400.

The bolt is TRW, the stock was a converted (filled) M14 stock, so USGI.  I only got a quick look at it, I didn't want to express any interest until I got to do some research.

I appreciate the feedback.  I'm going to pass on this one, but I will keep my eye open for one in the future.  I don't need it to be super early, I just want all USGI parts.
