I have a guy wanting to trade me an H&R M1 for a Norinco M14 I have.

The Norinco is bone stock side stamped Norinco with no USGI parts.

This is what he has told me about the H&R.  I have wanted an M1 Garand for some time but I don't want to be foolish about this.

H&R M1 Garand. You should be able to see all the numbers in the pics. It may be a CMP gun, but I don't know what grade. It hasn't been refinished and has an old stock. I've fired maybe 8 clips with no issues. The throat and muzzle both measure 2 or 2+. I'll value your rifle higher, but I don't know by how much. If you're interested, let me know how much cash you want added.

Here are the pictures he sent me.

What do you think?  Is this thing even worth fooling with?  I have other M14s so it is not like I would miss the Norinco.  As a matter of fact it hasn't been out of the safe since I got my Fulton National Match running well.

If it is worth messing with, what do you think would be a good value for the H&R?  How much cash would you have him add with it for the Norico?

Thanks in advance.

That is a rack or field grade for sure just based on the stock. Note the bullet at an angle so make it seem like the ME is better than it is. I'd pass just based on that. It might be an honest mistake but I'm a jerk like that :)

Anyway it's probably a $550 garand IMO you'd be better off selling the m14 and getting a $625 service grade from CMP.

Not to pile on but since it's a post war it would drive me nuts until I got it rebarrled and replaced the stock so it shot nice to do that you'd be looking at $300 to make it competitive.

I'm new to Garands so I can't comment on the trade offer but as someone already pointed out you can't go wrong with getting one from CMP.  I got my first one last week from CMP and it was a great experience and a great rifle.  I went with a HRA service grade special (sometimes confused with a CMP special but not the same).

The service grade special has HRA collector grade metal in excellent almost new condition but comes with a new stock(not original). The story from CMP is they found some HRA's with no stocks but like new metal.  My rifle looks brand new and the metal is all HRA....the barrel looks better than my 1 yr old A-bolt.

Also, the CMP store in Anniston, AL (noticed you were in GA) usually has HRA SGS in stock.  A lot of fun and learned a lot talking to the guys at the store.  $950 for the HRA SGS but you can get a regular service grade via mail order (on back order so none are available at store currently) for $625.

One other thing, as of last week the store had AP ammo in stock ($110 for 200).  CMP currently doesn't offer AP via mail order so it was nice to pick up in store.

If you really want to see if the rifle was sold through the CMP they will look through their files for a small fee (I think it is $25). Unless you really know what you are looking for, it can be difficult to tell if some receivers are re-welds. If you purchase one from the CMP, you won't have to worry about that. Without having a complete parts breakdown (to see if it has anything particularily rare) I would say by the pictures, it is a $500 to $600 rifle. Keep in mind you can get a service grade from the CMP for $625 plus $25 shipping.

I don't know if that's how H&R did their finishes, but it looks too dark to me.  Like....  I don't know like it's not right.  That stock looks abused too...  So...
