I've recently acquired an M1 Carbine '44 Winchester receiver, Criterion barrel, mix of contract small parts with a pot-belly stock, flip safety, ria band with bayo lug, round "M" bolt with SG internals. Thing is it has a Bavarian marked (stamped) trigger group. Any thoughts on if I should keep the Bavarian stamp or find a nice milled unit for this?
On another note.... Looks like $$$ value of these is going to climb as I see CMP has no carbines left short of a few Bavarian on auction. Ideas on value of my described carbine? |

Well, from what I understand, the bavarian guns have been said to be in very good working order. Like they were usually taken care of. The Criterion barrel might be evidence of that. As I'm assuming that was a replacement barrel at some point. Meaning they wanted it to shoot well and got rid of a shot out barrel. However, it might lower the actual value of the carbine. As it's not original.
Either way I'm sure it's a fine carbine. You got pics? |
| I'm pretty sure that the Germans and Austrians didn't rebarrel their carbines with Criterion barrels. Possibley a rack grade CMP rifle that someone had rebarreled. If you haven't shot it yet, you might be surprised just how accurate that thing is with the new barrel. |
| I have shot it once and I was indeed surprised by the accuracy. Growing up my mother used to hunt whitetail with an M1 Carbine due to a bad back (low recoil and weight). I don't recall what her receiver was but it was all old-school type 1 with a Marlin barrel. She still has hers and I'll have to get a closer look next time I visit. I just remember my dad hated that little carbine and she loved hunting with it so he gave it to her. Pics are a pita, anyone have a better suggestion on what image host to use? |
| Your proposed value is what I was thinking though I'm not looking to sell. Even with a commercial barrel the carbine still grows in value and makes a great investment. Funny though is the fact I was on the prowl for a Garand and got a Carbine! It will be a fun walking through the woods gun / plinking carbine.... |

But somebody rebarreled at one point and that seemed like evidence that someone cared for the thing. Or tried to. |

That potbelly stock is an M2 stock, not an M1. That is a common replacement- they are cheaper than the M1 stocks and easy to find. It sounds like someone had a rack grade M1 carbine and fixed it up to shoot rather than try to make it look "correct" to sell. That stock will work as well as an M1 stock and that barrel will probably outshoot my Winchester's. |
