I have read the FAQ, looked at CMP webpage, i have all the purchase requirements covered, and i live about 1.5 hours away from south store. I am considering driving out Thursday and look for a Service Grade. Is there anything in particulate other than the barrel wear i should be looking for?
Also i see that they are out of some of the grades on their webpage. Do you think these will come back in in the future or do we think this is the end of those Garands? Have they ever run out of some grades in the past and then gotten in new shipments to restock the racks with? Des ammo availability come and go or is it mostly just "going" at this point. |
| I would get the best gun you can with the money you have now. Because the availability of them in the future, is uncertain. I would imagine some may come up for sale that were already bought from the CMP from individuals. But as far as the CMP goes, it's up in the air. And numbers are dwindling. At least that's how I understand it. |

It may still be worth your trip but the stores have not had a lot of selection lately. In fact, they are going to be reducing the store hours because their inventory is low. Basically, they are filling the mail orders with the rifles they grade and inspect instead of filling the store shelves.

| You should peruse the CMP Forums, you can see reports from the stores to see what's available. Your probably going to have to ail order if you want a servuce grade. If you can afford a service grade special, I would get it then find a HRA stock to put it in |

There are NO Rack, Field or Service ($625) grades in inventory in the South Store. There hasn't been for some time and it doesn't look like there will be any for some time to come. They are using ALL Service grade rifles to fulfill mail in orders.
I was there a few weeks ago, and at that time there were only a few (15-20) Service Grade Specials ($950) in the racks. I would call before making a 3 hour round trip. |

They still have thousands of crates to go through, and all they know is a basic idea of what manufacturers are in there, not what is physically in there (could be burned-up rifles, could be bare receivers, could be unissued)...as they don't know how those rifles will grade out, they can't say for sure what they have. This was the recent case with the field grade HRA rifles...they were taking orders for them, and as they were opening crates, weren't finding many that met that grade...but they were finding springfields that did, so I switched my HRA order to a springfield and they even put them up on the estore for a few days until the incoming orders for them got close to what they knew they had.
A lot of good advice here as far as making a trip...I'd say go anyway since it's a neat place to visit, and if they have something you want, get it; otherwise, mail order OR submit your order in person right there. Then grab ammo and whatever accessories you want while you're there and take them home with you that day and save them. As far as rack grades go, the only ones I think they will ever offer again are Winchesters and IHC rifles if they ever find any more...reason being, I read on the CMP forums that the rack grade Springfields and HRA rifles are being used to make the CMP specials. |
