What stock is on the rifle?  Will this be a bench rig?  Or will you be using the rifle for hunting?

If you want to have anything resembing accuracy you do not want to mount any bipod to the barrel or gas system.

The USGI unit was kind of OK because they did it for a automatic rifleman role, in use it was a machine gun with a beaten zone and not as much as a single aimed shot weapon.  As a machine gunner a bit of scattering of your bullets is desireable.

The only way for accuracy to not be impaired is to mount to the forend say for a scoped marksman rifle.    Most USGI stocks, wood and fiberglas, are a touch thin in the forend to put an uncle mikes stud.  You have to watch the clearance inside and probably should reinforce to prevent forend cracking.   Guys have epoxied in aluminum plates or more fiberglass to beef up the forend.

If you're not worried about the traditional exterior cosmetics you can get the picatinny rail mount unit that replaces the standard sling swivel.

Here's a pic that came up first on google.  I don't know the company from Jack so don't take it as a recommendation for them or the product.

here's another one from Sadlak I like better than the GGG unit;
http://sadlak.com/si_hd_front_rail.html

Harris (bipod company)  has a doodad that fills the forend vent/drain hole.  Guys have been improvising a mount there for years and often crack their damn stocks in this very thin spot.   I would never use that method.  Also Sadlak has one similar but it uses the sling holes and is epoxied in place.  They tout with it's two fasteners and plates it's 3x stronger than a single hole mount like the Harris bipod mount that goes in the drain hole.

ETA- I mentioned 2 Harris's and I don't think they're both the same, the harris tactical online site and the Harris bipod company are I believe seperate entities, just didn't want to imply that they were the same.

Harris sells a flange adapter that works very well on one of my M1As; you've got to dremel out a portion of the stock , fit the flange and epoxy it in. I mounted it just in front of the front sling mount in the exhaust hole.
They can be found here:

THIS is the one that would crack your stock forend:
