Bolt doesn't slam shut after new clip goes in, I have to help it with a slight bump on op rod charging handle...sign of problem, improper grease application, or normal and don't worry about it? Tanks in advance!

Quite normal,  a small bump is ok.

-As long as the clip goes in and latches securely and the bolt is released.  It's ok to need a bump.  Something to do with the accelerator to op rod catch toleranes.

ETA- you can even see GI's doing it in war footage.  On the TV show combat some of  the actors were recent war vets, You could watch them load and instinctively bump the op rod forward.  The minor issue has been there for a looooong time.

Mine does the same. Seems to require less of a bump with some of my more worn clips.

As stated above, it is normal.  When the clip is loaded and latched into place, the bolt slides forward and is pushing against the rear of the first cartridge to be loaded.  The bolt may not have the energy to strip the cartridge, especially if as noted the clip is new and relatively strong.  A simple bump forward on the operating rod handle solves this issue.

The procedure is many documentaries as well as war movies.  In Saving Private Ryan, Private Mellish performs this when loading his M1 during the D-Day landing.

Got it, what I thought...I have seen various footage in movies and documentaries is showing the bump...just thought I'd throw it out there for confirmation. It's still a relatively new platform to me so still sorting some idiosyncrasies...thanks!

the other thing that affect it is the age of the ammunition. if you have nice shiny new ammo it's much more likely to strip smoothly than if you have old tarnished ammo.  I noticed that on mine, sometimes it needs a bump sometimes it doesn't so look for loose clips and shiny ammo ;)

Thats good to know. I havent shot my M1 yet but I have loaded and unloaded it a several times to get the feel for how it operates and a few times it did need a little nudge to close fully. Next time I watch a WWII movie ill be on the lookout for it.

I've seen a video clip of John C. Garand doing the op rod bump after loading a full en-bloc. Normal operation!!!

Every Garand clinic I have gone to stated it's normal to have to drive the first one home.
